Murphy returns to winning ways at Davenport

DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 29, 2009) – Defending track champion Mike Murphy Jr., finally broke out of the early season slump he has been struggling with in 2009.  Murphy dominated the Track Tamer Engines IMCA Late Model feature, leading flag to flag for the win at the Davenport Speedway, Friday.

‘Wildman’ Kevin Blum started tenth and would finish second, a full straightaway behind Murphy.

The hard slick track yielded a number of surprise finishes. Gary Webb, driving the Z-2 car took third. Mike Guldenpfennig put up a strong run to finish fourth with Adam Oppendike fifth.

Rick Ratliff passed Brian Webb on lap four of the Pro Mod main to take the lead. At the time, he didn’t know it was the pass for win. Ratliff would lead the remainder of the 20-lap feature, for his first win this year.

Chuck Hanna made a late charge for second. Tim Arp finished with a flat tire in third. John Bull and Brian Webb rounded out the top five. Bull and John Ahlers won the Pro Mod heats.

Jeff Stevens found familiar territory in victory lane, after the Street Stock main. Stevens is a former Davenport track champion.

Late in the race, Andrew Burk was all over Stevens’ rear bumper, but would have to settle for second, Jeremy Marquette came from deep in the field to finish third. Tim Koehler and Aaron Burroughs were fourth and fifth respectively.

Marion’s Max Corporon captured his third IMCA Modified feature win at Davenport this year. Corporon started 15th and had to go three-wide with early race leaders Kevin Fitzgibbon and Hunter Wilson to take the lead. Once in front, Corporon cruised to a comfortable win.

Mike Fluegel finished second, with second heat winner Dan Klatt third. Joe Jones Jr., took fourth, while third heat winner, Matt Wilson was fifth. Pat Fennelly won the other heat.

Wisconsin’s Eric Barth stayed perfect on the year at the Davenport Speedway. On his third visit, his third Bulltown Legends of Iowa win of 2009. Warren Ropp started in the last row and made a late race charge to finish second. Bethany Wyttenbach took third, ahead of Keith Meyer and Mike Mueller.

Travis Wilson scored his first CrashedToys.com 4 Stock win of the year. Wilson went quickly to the lead from his sixth starting spot, but would need to hold off Steve Boyle all the way to the checkers. Mitch Bielenberg, Josh Riley and Kevin Haury completed the top five.
