Hershel Roberts scores popular IMCA LM win
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 5, 2009) – Veteran racer Hershel Roberts led only one
lap of the Track Tamer Engine Late Model feature, the one that counted. The
popular victory was Roberts’ first since 2007.
Early in the 25-lap main, Mike Murphy Jr., looked to be the man to beat.
Murphy got out to a big lead early, but a rash of mid-race cautions kept the
competitors close. Roberts started alongside Murphy in the front row and
stayed in the top five throughout the race.
A late race caution set up a three lap shootout, with Murphy leading,
Roberts second, and Ray Guss Jr., third. Murphy again took a lead, but now,
the bottom groove had started to wear20out. Roberts, using the high side,
made his move coming to the white flag and landed the top spot coming out of
turn two.
Following the lead duo to the checkers, in order were Ray Guss Jr., Mike
Garland, and Marty Diercks. All three drivers qualified through the consi.
Roberts, Kevin Blum, and Stephan Kammerer won the late model heats, while
Doug Nigh won the consi.
Thad Wilson powered his way to his third Pro Mod feature win of the season
at Davenport. Wilson started eighth, took the lead on lap four, and led to
the checkers. Wilson’s opportunity to take the lead came when John Ahlers
and Ray Cox Jr., battled for the lead.
John Bull started one spot behind Thad and would finish the same. Ahlers
held on for third, with Rick Ratliff and Donovan Lodge fourth and fifth res
pectively.
In a repeat of last week, Jeff Stevens fought off Andrew Burk to win the
Street Stock feature. Stevens led flag to flag with Burk hounding him
virtually every lap. Cary Brown finished third, breaking up what would have
been a repeat of the top four. Jeremy Marquette and Tim Koehler were top
five finishers again.
Max Corporon blistered the field in the IMCA Modified feature. Corporon and
Rich Smith both started in row five. Corporon would get to the front first
and take the win. Smith would have to settle for second, with early race
leader Pat Fennelly third. Joe Jones Jr., and Chris Stein finished fourth
and fifth.
It was worst to first for Warren Ropp in the Bulltown Legends of Iowa
feature. Ropp started in the last row and took the lead on lap nine. Keith
Meyer drove up to challenge for the lead on the final lap, but got loose in
turn two and started a three car incident that resulted in Craig Morris
rolling his ride. No one was seriously injured in the crash.
The resulting red flag ended the race with Ropp taking the win, Jeremy Meyer
second and Dominic Bates third.
Travis Wilson collecting his second straight victory in the CrashedToys.com
4 Stocks. Wilson had a fierce duel with Clatyon Bicker for the win. Wilson
took the win by half a car-length over Bicker. Steve Boyle, Josh Riley, and
Matt Montoya completed the top five.
Next Friday, June 12th, is Kid’s Night sponsored by Farmer’s Supply Sales.
Children 12 and under will receive free admission with a paid adult. Bike
races will be held at the end of the racing action. All bi ke race
participants are reminded to bring their helmets, along with their bikes for
safety.
