High Car Count Brings Excitement to SCS!
By Shannon Lowe
HARLAN, IA (June 13) - Eager sport compact drivers kicked off the racing at
Shelby County Speedway this week as they anticipated their late night return
to the track for King of the Hill racing after the feature races were
complete but several drivers experienced the bitter pang of disappointment
as their night of racing was cut short due to mechanical malfunction or
driver error. During the Shelby County Speedway Sport Compact feature cars
were packed like sardines 4 and 5 wide for several laps as drivers struggled
to come out of it on top. Portsmouth’s Taylor Griffen pulled out to the
front with Gary Ashcraft hot on his tail and the make it a two car battle
for first with Griffen using the bottom of the track to gain an advantage
but Ashcraft out racing him on the stretches. Gary Ashcraft of Glenwood took
the checkered flag with Taylor Griffen in second, Terry Romick of Exira in
third, Tom “Kat” Summerfield of Dunlap in fourth and Colby Madsen of
Kimballton in fifth.
The WAM Performance Parts Hobby Stocks filled the speedway with 28 hard
racing drivers. Joel Tiggs of Carroll took the early lead but Shannon
Andersen of Atlantic wasted no time threading the needle through traffic to
take the lead with a handful of Hansen’s behind him. Tiggs lost the second
spot as the Hansen’s began to leap frog him. Kenny Hansen of Audubon snagged
the second spot and set his sights on Andersen. Kurt Hansen took the third
spot from Tiggs and left him to Jeff Hansen who drove around him to land the
fourth spot. The race for second had Kurt Hansen of Walnut stripping Kenny
Hansen of second place coming off a restart with two laps to go. Shannon
Andersen won the trophy, Kurt Hansen in second, Kenny Hansen in third, Jeff
Hansen in fourth, and Joel Tiggs held on to fifth.
With 31 KNOD Sport Mods signing in for a chance to churn dirt at Shelby
County Speedway, fans experienced double the show with two Sport Mod
Features. In the first Audubon’s Jared Hansen took on Lake City’s Doug Smith
and Shelby’s Chad Dills early in the race with Hansen taking the early lead
leaving the pack to chase him down. Dills made the first move, reeling in
Hansen and working for position to pass. As Dills sets up to pass Hansen,
Smith made his move powering around both to take the lead. Dills gained
second and left Hansen holding on in third. Tanner Powers moved his way into
position to challenge but lost traction and finished the race with only
fifth place captured, Brett Meyer in fourth, Jared Hansen in third, Chad
Dills in second and Doug Smith capturing his first KNOD Sport Mod trophy at
Shelby County Speedway in 2009.
In the second IMCA Sport Mod feature of the night Luke Wanniger of Jefferson
drives hard from the middle of the pack and charges to the front where David
Hulsebus of Tennant was at ease in the top spot. Wanniger worked his way
into comfortable third and worked to find a way around Tim Wilcox who sat in
the second spot. A caution packs them together and Wanniger used it to its
full advantage and settled into the lead. Hulsebus didn’t back down easily
and continued to confront Wanniger taking the lead but was unable to shake
Wanniger. Wanniger chased him down again and managed to take the lead back
on the front stretch and kept it until the checkered flew sending him to the
O’Reilly Victory Lane, with Dave Hulsebus in second, Dan McKeighan in third,
Tim Wilcox in fourth and Michael Grantham in fifth.
Jason Rold of Avoca and Chris Ullrich of Kiron tried to hold the lead as the
Pizza Ranch Stock Cars charged through the first lap of their feature race
and both lost ground to Jeremy Gettler as he charged past them both rubbing
doors as he fought his way to the front. Chris Ullrich found himself shifted
to the back of the pack pinball style and left stranded high in turn two. A
little help from a tow truck and the race was back under the green flag with
Gettler out in front and the challengers crowded behind. There were no
runaway winners in this race with Gettler under fire as Tim Bengard and
Keith Knop both challenge him with one to the left and one to the right. All
three wanted just a bit more grip to help push them out in front as the race
continued three wide. A caution reset the race, but Gettler’s eager start
earlier in the race when he ran over the marker cone, had him moved back two
spots. Luck gave Knop the lead but he was determined to keep it and out ran
Bengard for a few laps before Bengard pulled along side for the final lap.
Both racers charged the checkered flag side by side but Bengard took the
victory by a nose leaving Knop in second, Brian Blessington in third, Jason
Rold in fourth, and Dustin Smith in fifth.
Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds took the track by storm with the race for first
a constant battle between Nick Deal of Walnut and Jeff Stephens of Arion.
The race is run door to door for several laps before Stephens slid back in
behind Deal to ride along for a few laps. Stephens found an opening and
drove out and around Deal into the lead, and resparked the door to door
challenge. As they worked into lap traffic, experience gave Stephens the
edge and he began to gain some ground leaving Deal behind. A caution with
two to go brought the pack in behind the leader and the crowd to its feet as
Deal and Stephens raced side by side for the final two laps. As the racers
come out of turn four and head to the checkered flag both moved to block
their competition and Stephens crossed the finish line first as Deal’s hot
rod went into a 360 spin and he crossed the finish line tail first in second
place. Both race teams were unsure what the officials call would be due to
the unconventional nature of the finish, but officials called Stephens the
winner, Deal in second, Ryan Webb, Jeff Jones and Jeff James finishing out
the top five.
Budweiser Late Models took the track 18 cars strong, and Mark Plowman as
Marty Donor of Council Bluffs worked his way through the pack. Plowman’s car
gets loose and he loses position to Don Beckstrum of Carroll. Beckstrom held
the top spot until Donor worked his way around to strip him of it. Josh Most
of Red Oak and Barry Sorensen of Harlan were working hard to maneuver
through the pack and Most managed to drive through the traffic ahead of
Sorensen to take the lead and the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane with Todd
Cooney in second, Barry Sorensen in third, Shawn Essex in fourth and Gary
Hopp in fifth.
The King of the Hill Races for the Shelby County Speedway Sport Compacts had
the sport compact cars who qualified pitted against each other in head to
head tournament style racing. Taylor Griffen faced off against Bryan Smith
in the first round. Smith who’s cars was damaged earlier in the evening was
in James Smith’s 88 car which also proved to have mechanical issues and was
easily out ran by Griffen. Brandon Claussen and Caine Mahlberg were out on
the track next. Claussen had the early lead and kept it, putting him in the
next bracket. Joe Andersen and Tom “Kat” Summerfield hit the track next and
Andersen took the win despite having taken an earlier ride on the hook end
of tow truck. Final cars in the first bracket had drivers Gary Ashcraft and
Terry Romick pitted against each other. Ashcraft took the checkered despite
a close race. Griffen hit the speedway with Claussen in the next round and
the Portsmouth youth captures the win. Andersen brought his car back out to
face off against Ashcraft and Ashcraft takes the win setting up the final
race as a rerun of the feature as Griffen found himself with a second chance
to run down Ashcraft. Door to door they cruised around the dirt track before
Griffen found an edge on Ashcraft and took the win to be crowned Sport
Compact King of the Hill.
Racing resumes on the dirt at Shelby County Speed way this Saturday Night
with hot laps at 6:30, racing at 7. This Father’s Day weekend the WAM
Performance Parts Hobby Stocks take their turn at King of the Hill racing.
