Roberts and Blum Grab Late Model Wins at Davenport
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 26, 2009) – Mid-Season Championships and one make-up feature from two weeks ago were on tap Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. Between qualifying and features, the 106 competitors on hand turned 250 laps of competition on the quarter mile dirt oval.

The evening’s program started off with the make-up feature for the Track Tamer Engines IMCA Late Models, from June 12. Pole sitter Jeff Walker jumped to the early lead. Walker would hold the lead until the second caution flag of the race flew on lap 12.

Hershel Roberts took the lead on the ensuing restart, with Ray Guss Jr., closing fast. Guss would lead lap 21, but Roberts regained th e lead a lap later and hold on to the checkers. This was Roberts second straight victory, even though the first came June 5. Guss would finish second with Gary Webb third. Mike Murphy Jr., and Matt Ryan rounded out the top five.

This week’s late model action saw Kevin Blum take his second win of the season. Mendon, Illinois driver Keith Pratt led laps one through six, when the caution flag flew. Stephan Kammerer grabbed the lead off the restart and would hold the top spot for the next 14 laps.

Using the very bottom of the racetrack, Blum would finally get by Kammerer on lap 22, and drive on to the win. Kammerer held on for second, Guss was third, Bret Diercks fourth, and Matt Ryan fifth.
Bob Dominacki picked up his first point win of the year at Davenport, in the Pr o Mod class. Dominacki got under Brian Webb to take the race lead on lap eight. Bob the had to fight off the charges of early race leader John Ahlers, to earn the victory. Ahlers finished a close second, followed by Ray Cox Jr, Webb, and Craig Crawford.

Andrew Burk led only one lap of the street stock feature, the final one. The win was his second of the year.

Aaron Burroughs rocketed to the lead on lap one of the green, white checkered Street Stock main. ‘Real Deal’ Joe Beal went out front on lap four and started to power away. Burk used the high side of the track to close in on Beal. The two leaders were side by side coming to the white flag. Burk had the momentum on the final lap and took the win. Burroughs held on for third, with Jeremy Marquette fourth and Cary Brown fifth.

Max Corporon continued his dominance of the IMCA Modified class at the Davenport track. Corporon pocketed his fourth straight and sixth win overall at Davenport in 2009. Kevin Fitzgibbon took the early lead after starting in the front row. A restart on lap five allowed Terry Rentfro to pass Fitzgibbon for the lead. The next restart on lap nine was all Corporon needed to take away the lead and race to the win. Rentfro held on for second. Mike Fluegel fought his way to a third place finish, followed by Tod Stickler and Chris Stein.

Jacob Ellithorpe took home the checkers in the CrashedToys, com 4 Stocks. Ellithorpe started ninth and would have to pass early race leader Steve Boyle to take the win. Boyle would finish second, ahead of Rob Brasher. Travis Wilson and Chris James rounded out the top five.

Chalk up another win for INEX Legends hot shoe, Eric Barth. The Wisconsin native once again led a trio of northern invaders to the checkered flag, his sixth this year. Barth took the lead on lap thr ee of the fifteen lap race. Jeff Steenbergen wrestled the lead away on lap eleven, but tangled with a lapped car a couple circuits later, giving the lead and the win to Barth. Mike Mueller finished second, with Steenbergen recovering for third. The local contingent was headed by Jeremy Meyer in fourth and Craig Peekenschnieder in fifth.

The cars and drivers of the Midwest Jalopies will make their annual appearance at the Davenport Speedway next Friday, July 3, as an added attraction.
