Pizza Ranch Stock Cars Shine at Shelby County Speedway
By Shannon Lowe
HARLAN, IOWA (June 29) - Pizza Ranch night at the races started with great
weather for fans and drivers, great gifts for fans in the stands from the
Pizza Ranch all night long and a smooth slick track for drivers during the
show.
Line up for June 27th races at Shelby County Speedway were again shuffled to
keep the track in good condition down to the last races. The Budweiser Late
Models started the Pizza Ranch Night at the Races feature show down with
another runaway winner and someone new in O’Reilly Victory Lane. Gary Hopp
of Harlan took the early lead and worked the track to out run his
competition. Josh Most started his run through the pack early, in the groove
and on the move as he dove through the middle of Vic Lovejoy and Vance Tonak
to land the fourth spot. He plowed past Marty Donor and then Don Beckstrom
to gain second but was unable to make up the stretch difference putting Gary
Hopp in the O’Reilly Victory Lane, Most in second, Beckstrom in third, Vance
Tonak in fourth and Vic Lovejoy in fifth.
As the green flag fell over the Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds, a “No Fear”
attitude prevailed as the drivers challenged each other with three wide
racing all around the speedway on the first few laps. Chad Preul and Scott
Carlson sprinted out to an early lead but Brandon “Red” Monson and Jeff
Stephens both on the move headed to the front to challenge. A caution gave
Monson and Jeff Jones the opportunity to close the distance to the leaders
and both took full advantage, and drove around the top two cars to land the
top spots. Jones worked to find a chance to pass Monson but despite
challenging side by side for the final laps was unable to take the lead and
finished second with Chad Preul, Craig Reetz, and Jeff Stephens behind him
to finish out the top five.
It was the Pizza Ranch Stock Cars night to shine with the Pizza Ranch King
of the Hill races following the regular features, but Keith Knop and his 10x
hot rod out of Shelby dominated the night. Despite being fenced in for
several laps during the feature race, Knop was able to break loose and
sprint around Jason Rold to land the number three spot before using the high
side of turns three and four to power past Todd Mabbit and Dave Plowman.
With an open track before him there was no stopping him and he took the
checkered flag leaving Dustin Smith, Tim Bengard, Dave Plowman and Clay
Christian behind him in the top five. The challengers had another chance
face Knop in the King of the Hill races but the 10x proved uncatchable and
Keith Knop also took home the Pizza Ranch Stock Car King of the Hill Crown.
Dennis Cook held the early lead in the KNOD Sport Mod feature but
challengers from deep in the pack were headed his way. Dan McKeighan showed
fans the same speed and skill that he does every week as he began moving his
way to the front as Exira’s Tanner Powers tested his own skill moving
through traffic also. McKeighan and Powers pick their way through traffic to
challenge the leaders and both find their way out front. In the final laps,
Powers brought the race side by side but was unable to pick up an edge over
McKeighan who took the checkered flag and the Pizza Ranch bonus money,
leaving Powers in second, Dennis Cook in third, Doug Smith in fourth and Tim
Wilcox in fifth.
The narrower tires in the WAM Performance Parts Hobby Stocks combined with
the slick track to give some drivers some difficulty with the handle on
their racing machines but many of the drivers had experienced similar track
conditions and had no trouble. Eric Wallis held the early lead but Kenny
Hansen and Shannon Anderson were both headed that way as Chuck Madden
outraces Wallis to take the top spot. Anderson works his way into second.
With two laps to go Madden and Anderson battled head to head but Madden took
the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane with Anderson finishing second, Eric
Wallis in third, Charlie Bird in fourth and Derrick Rohe in fifth.
As the Shelby County Speedway Sport Compacts took their feature race up to
speed, Daniel Mefford held the early lead before Tom “Kat” Summerfield
jumped two spots to take the lead. Gary Ashcraft drove into the top five and
just kept going driving past Dustin Poldberg in second to take on
Summerfield. Ashcraft used a caution restart to swing around Summerfield and
takes the checkered flag followed by Tom Summerfield, Bryan Smith, Cory
Flanigan and Dustin Poldberg.
Racing at the Shelby County Speedway will be back underway this Saturday
night on Independence Day with an earlier start time. Gates open at 3 pm,
Hot Laps start at 4:30 pm and racing begins at five on Budweiser Night at
the Races. Head to the Shelby County Speedway for IMCA Dirt Track Racing and
then view Harlan’s City Fireworks at Dusk.
