DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 3, 2009) – It may not have been the Fourth of July, Friday at the Davenport Speedway, but there were plenty of fireworks to go around. The six weekly classes yielded first time winners, repeat winners, and lots of yellow flags. Kevin Blum again topped the field of Track Tamer Engine IMCA Late Models, for his second win in a row. Blum grabbed the lead on lap nine of 25-lap main, and held on to the checkered flag. The victory was his third this year. Ray Guss Jr., started 12th and would finish second. Guss was driving Hershel Roberts’ racecar throughout the evening. Nate Buesling finished third, while Fred Remley recovered from a first lap incident to take fourth. Mike Murphy Jr., rounded out the top five. Early race leader Mike Guldenpfennig faded to a sixth place finish. Blum, Buesling, and Matt Ryan won late model heats, while Bret Diercks won the semi. John Bull finally broke his long dry spell at the Davenport Speedway by taking a convincing win in the Pro Mod main. The victory was Bull’s first point win at the Davenport track since 2006. Randall VerPlaetse led the first two laps of the race before Ahlers took over the top spot. Ahlers would lead until he brought out the second caution of the race at lap thirteen. Cautions breed cautions and there were four more over the next five laps. Bull led Joe Ross and 15th place starter Doug Crampton to the checkers. Bob Dominacki and Thad Wilson finished fourth and fifth respectively, after being involved in separate incidents earlier in the race. Jeff Stevens collected win number three of the season during the Street Stock feature. Stevens swiped the lead from Aaron Burroughs early and had to hold off Joe Beal to the finish line. Burroughs stuck around to place third behind Beal. Tim Koehler was fourth and Rick Schriner fifth. Matt Wilson earned both his first ever modified and first ever Davenport win in the IMCA Modified main. After an opening lap caution, Wilson lept to the lead from his third place starting spot. Wilson would lead throughout the 15-lap race for the win. Point leader Max Corporon started tenth and was forced to pit after the opening caution, but rallied back to finish second. Mike Fluegel took third, followed by Chris Stein and Terry Rentfro. INEX Legend Car ace, Eric Barth, stayed perfect for the 2009 season at Davenport. Six times the Sauk City, Wisconsin, native has traveled to Davenport and six times he has made it to the Bulltown Legends of Iowa victory lane. This week, Barth took the lead from Mike Mueller on lap seven and raced to the checkers. Warren Ropp drove to a second place finish, with Mueller holding on for third. Jeremy Meyer and Craig Peekenschnieder completed the top five. The CrashedToys.com 4 Stocks also saw a first-time winner. Scott Powell, driving Clayton Bicker’s car, collected his first Davenport win. Powell took the lead on lap six, aft er Phil Anderson, Josh Riley, and Mike Morrow each took a turn at the front. Following Powell to the checkered flag were Morrow, Kevin Haury, Riley, and Jacob Ellithorpe, in that order. The cars and drivers of the Midwest Jalopies will make their annual appearance at the Davenport Speedway next Friday, July10th.
