Heat is On at Shelby County Speedway
By Shannon Lowe

HARLAN, IA (August 8) - The heat was on at Shelby County Speedway as Saturday Night racing got underway with the Sport Compacts taking the track under the green flag.   Caine “The Bandit” Mahlberg worked through the pack to steal the lead from Daniel Mefford who slid back into the pack after being challenged by Bryan Smith.  With the Bandit running well ahead of the pack, the race looked to be locked up until a caution brought the pack together for a restart, giving Taylor Griffen a chance to flex his talons as he grabbed hold of the track and earned the second spot before losing ground to Gary Ashcraft and finishing third behind Ashcraft in second and Caine Mahlberg who earned the trip to victory lane.

Competition was sizzling in the WAM Performance Parts Hobby Stocks with 18 cars on the track as the green flag dropped.  During the early race, cars stayed packed together as dominate racers sought the best line around Taimon Wehr who started on the point. Joel Tigges of Carroll managed to work his way to the front and was holding a strong lead as Kenny Hansen started his move toward the front of the race with Devon Smith right on his heels.  Audubon racer Derrick Rohe held Hansen off for only a short while before Kenny Hansen drove around him to land in the second spot behind Tigges setting the race up for a last lap run down with Hansen powering out of turn four and under the checkered flag just in front of Tigges.  Anderson pulls in to claim however and a claim on Tigges was refused, resulting in Tigges losing the second place finish on the night, all points earned on the year and garnered him a $1000 fine.  Derrick Rohe was moved into second place as a result with Devin Smith in third and Shannon Anderson then finishing fourth.

Tempers ran hot with the KNOD Sport Mods as several accidents took racers out of the competition early.  Chad Dills hit the front stretch wall after some contact with Ed Hamilton and the accident collected Doug Smith, caused extensive damage to all three vehicles and ended all three drivers race night.  After the restart, Tanner Powers worked his way around Tim Wilcox to lead the race as Hulsebus worked his way to the front and around Wilcox to land in second.  As Hulsebus worked to find a line around Powers the two came together causing Powers to spin with the whole pack driving at him.  Both cars were able to continue but were moved to the back of the pack as a result of the contact.  Luke Wanniger who had been sitting in third finished out his run to O’Reilly Victory Lane unchallenged with Dan McKeighan just behind him in second, Jesse Sobbing earning third, Tim Wilcox in fourth and Tyler Gross finished out the top five.

Ten Pizza Ranch Stock Cars took the track for feature racing at Shelby County Speedway but it quickly became a four car race as Clay Christian, Keith Knop, Brian Blessington and Tim Bengard drove around and away from the pack.   Blessington and Bengard worked their way out to the top two spots with Bengard taking the edge under the checkered flag leaving Blessington in second, Knop in third and Christian in fourth.

Ryan Webb held on to the early lead in the Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds before losing power in his hot rod and handing the lead over to Nick “The Real” Deal who had quietly driven his new race machine into the top five.  With 6 laps to go, a caution puts Mike “Wahoo” Albertson and “Dangerous” Dale Ransom right behind Deal for a restart.  Ransom rode the top rail as Albertson looked low but Deal managed to stay out front as Albertson struggled with the handle on his number3 hot rod and slid back into the pack to finish 8th.  Deal took the checkered flag, followed by Ransom in second,  Jeff Jones, Jeff Stephens and Tim Plowman finishing out the top five.

Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds had Dave Jorgensen Jr out to an early lead but Kyle Wahlert’s wide bodied rocket was rearing to go and rocketed past Jorgensen looking for a runaway repeat of last week’s win at Shelby County Speedway.  Wahlert went unchallenged throughout the rest of the race and finished first with Josh Most behind him in second, Jorgensen back to third, Vance Tonak in fourth and Jay Stewart rounding out the top five.

Racing next week at the Shelby County Speedway will include water balloon fun on the front stretch at intermission!  Gates open at 5, Hot laps at 6:30 and racing begins at 7 pm.
