Countdown to Davenport Speedway Season Championship
DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 11, 2009) – Summer is beginning to wind down and so
is the 2009 racing season at the Davenport Speedway. Thus far, 2009 has been
an exciting one on the quarter-mile dirt oval. With only three races
remaining, points and victories will be contested every lap along the way.
This 2009 season has been one of both parity and domination. In only one of
the six weekly classes, the driver with the most feature wins is also the
point leader.
The Track Tamer Engines IMCA Late Model season has been one of late race
heroics, dramatic finishes, and nostalgia. Veteran racers Hershel Roberts,
Ray Guss Jr., and Gary Webb have each won features this season. Kevin ‘the
Wildman’ Blum (Colona, Ill.) has four feature wins, but trails Ray Guss Jr.
(Milan, Ill.) and Matt Ryan of Davenport, in the point standings.
Blum is also in the hunt for the IMCA National Championship as well. Nine of
the top twenty drivers in IMCA National Late Model Points are weekly
regulars at Davenport Speedway.
The story is much the same in the Pro Mod division. Thad Wilson leads all
racers with four victories, but trails John Bull in the points. Bull and
third place in points Bob Dominacki, each have one feature won this season.
The top three are separated by only 13 points. All three are former
Davenport track champions.
Jeff Stevens of Davenport, leads the Street Stock class with five feature
wins, but is not in contention for the track championship. Andrew Burk of
Eldridge, leads the point standings, but four other drivers are within 26
points with three races remaining. Joe Beal, Jeremy Marquette, Cary Brown,
and Tim Koehler are second through fifth respectively.
In its first season as a weekly class at the Davenport Speedway, the IMCA
Modifieds have put up some strong numbers. However, one driver has stood
head and shoulders above the rest. Marion, Iowa’s Max Corporon has won eight
of the eleven features run so far. Corporon holds a 58 point lead over
second place Mike Fluegel of Davenport. In addition to Corporon, Chris
Stein, Matt Wilson, and Rich Smith have won IMCA Modified features this
year.
As of August 6th, Corporon is 9th in IMCA Modified National Points.
Josh Riley of Stockton, has a 47 point lead in the CrashedToys.com 4 Stock
class. Riley has two feature wins on the season. Scott Powell leads the
class in victories with three feature wins in the last four races.
The big story in the Bulltown Legends of Iowa division has been Sauk City,
Wisconsin’s Eric Barth. Barth has raced at Davenport nine times this season
and has nine feature wins to show for it. While Barth leads the INEX Legends
Dirt Masters division in national points, he is only fourth in points at
Davenport, due to the two races he missed.
Jeremy Meyer of Cedar Rapids is leading the points, with Warren Ropp second
and Craig Peekenschnieder third.
In the first eleven races of the 2009 season, at the Davenport Speedway, 200
different drivers have competed in the weekly classes.
The regular weekly racing program at the Davenport Speedway, will resume
August 14th. The August 21st racing program will include an INEX Legend Car
Regional Qualifier as a part of the RACEceiver National Tour. The 2009
Season Championships will be run on Friday, August 28th.
