DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 14) - The Davenport Speedway roared back to life Friday night after the break for the Mississippi Valley Fair. With three races left in the 2009 regular season, the battle for the track championships are heating up lap by lap. Ray Guss Jr., led one lap of the Track Tamer Engines IMCA Late Model feature. To be more accurate, he led about one-quarter of a lap. Fortunately for Ray, it was the last quarter of the last lap, giving him his second victory at Davenport this season. The race started with Leroy Brenner leading lap one. On a lap two restart, Joe Zrostlik grabbed the top spot. Joe would lead until a lap eleven caution. When the race went back under green, Kevin Blum shot to the front, to become the third leader of the race. Guss had to go to the back of the field early in the race after being involved in someone else’s incident. Ray was aided in his drive to the front, by three mid-race cautions, and was just a car length behind Blum at the white flag. Guss got under Blum in turns three and four before squeezing into the lead. Blum would finish second, with Zrostlik third, Matt Ryan fourth, and Mike Garland fifth. The Pro Mod feature went much the same way as the late models, with most everyone battling for a spot on the bottom of the raceteack. Chad Patch jumped out to the early lead after starting on the pole. On lap nine, Tim Arp put his ride out front. Arp’s lead would last until lap fourteen, when he was sandwiched between. Doug Crampton and Bob Domnacki. After passing Arp, Crampton and Dominacki would continue the battle for the lead. Coming to the white flag, the two lead cars really got into one another, giving Thad Wilson the opportunity to take the lead. Wilson held on for the win. Crampton rebounded to finish second, with Dominacki third. Arp and John Ahlers completed the top five. In Street Stock action, it was Jeff Stevens taking the lead from Joseph Wagner on lap seven. A couple laps later, second place Wagner would get crossed up coming out of turn four. The ensuing wreck took out nearly a third of the field. Stevens coasted around to his sixth feature win of 2009, and his third in a row. Jeremy Marquette finished second, followed by last place starter Rick Schriner, Aaron Burroughs, and Joe Beal, in that order. Chris Stein collected his second feature win of the season in the IMCA Modified main. Stein started sixth and took the lead from Dan Klatt on lap seven. Stein would lead the rest of the way to the checkers. Klatt would hold on for second. Derrick Carlson took third, followed by Rob Nylin and Joe Jones Jr. Point leader Max Corporon was sidelined mid-race after clipping an infield tire on lap eleven . Scott Powell came through the field to take his fourth CrashedToys.com 4 Stock feature. Powell took the lead from Josh Riley on lap eight of the ten lap race. Riley finished second, followed by Kevin Haury, Steve Boyle, and Travis Wilson. Eric Barth is now a perfect ten in the Bulltown Legends of Iowa division. It took Barth until lap five to take the lead this week, en route to his tenth feature win in ten appearances. Dom inic Bates led laps one and two before Chad Hale got past. Hale’s lead lasted only a lap, as Mike Mueller slid by to lead lap four. Mueller finished second, with Warren Ropp third. Hale hung around to finish fourth with Jeremy Meyer fifth. The Legends portion of the August 21st races will be a National Qualifier event. Additional racers from Wisconsin and others are expected for the event.
