DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 28) - The Davenport Speedway brought down the curtain on the 2009 points season Friday. Several inches of rain during the week made the racing surface soft and tacky for the season finale. The Track Tamer Engines IMCA Late Models were racing for both the track championship and the national title, as the top three in national points, Kevin Blum, Terry Neal, and Ray Guss Jr. were all in action. Guss came into the evening as the leader in track points and started the 25-lap feature on the pole. Guss led the first four laps, before letting Blum get under him and take the lead. Neal, who had started 17th, had worked his way up to tenth, before pulling into the pits. Blum led the remaining laps and captured his fifth win of the season. Guss held a close second, which clinched the track championship and the precious bonus points towards the national title. Matt Ryan, who finished third in the race and second in track points, was followed by Nate Buesling and Todd Malmstrom. The Pro Mod title came down to the final lap as the top three drivers entered the night separated by seven points. Thad Wilson came into the night as the point leader and would leave as the track champion. Wilson won both his heat and feature races. Wilson’s only challenge of the evening came from Bob Dominacki who ran down Wilson in the feature, but could not make a pass for the lead. Dominacki would settle for second with John Bull third. Doug Crampton and Ray Cox Jr., completed the top five. The Street Stock class also entered the evening with a tight points battle. The top three drivers, Andrew Burk, Joe Beal, and Jeremy Marquette were separated by a mere 5 points and two more racers were within striking distance. Burk had mechanical problems in his heat race and had to start the feature in the rear in a borrowed car. Beal started on the pole and jumped out to the early lead. Marquette dropped out mid-race, while Burk worked his way through the pack to finish fifth. Beal led flag to flag for the win, his third of the year, and captured the Street Stock crown. Bruce Fosdyck Jr., finished the feature in second, with Cary Brown third, and Tim Koehler fourth. Max Corporon put the finishing touch on his IMCA Modified track championship. Corporon won both heat and feature races, his eighth feature win of the season. Corporon led all fifteen laps en route to the win. Terry Rentfro and Mike Fluegel went back and forth for second, with Rentfro eventually getting the spot. Fluegel finished third followed by Joe Jones Jr. and Dustin Crear. Josh Riley captured his third feature win of the year in the CrashedToys.com 4 Stocks and his first track championship. Riley held off a charging Kevin Haury for the win. Steve Boyle took third ahead of Brad McDermott and Rob Brasher. The Bulltown Legends of Iowa were competing in a national qualifier event as well as racing for track points. Entering the evening, Jeremy Meyer led Eric Barth by 20 points. In true sportsmanship, Barth who already had ten feature wins and was second in points loaned his racecar to fellow Wisconsin racer, Mike Mueller for the feature. BJ Bates got out to the early lead in the feature, but veteran driver Warren Ropp reeled in Bates by lap six. Ropp took the lead and went on to his second victory of the season. Craig Peekenschnieder finished second with Mueller taking third. Bates held on to finish fourth, followed by Jeremy Meyer, who claimed the track title. The next event at the Davenport Speedway will be the 6th Annual Spooktacular, on Saturday, September 26th.
