Sobbing Takes First Feature Win At SCS
By Shannon Lowe
HARLAN, IA (August 31) - Races at the Shelby County Speedway were underway
last Saturday under clear skies as fans took the stands bearing jackets and
blankets to guard against the cool weather. Shelby County Sport Compacts
again brought excitement to the speedway as Taylor Griffen experienced a
spectacular rollover during the heats before returning to the dirt in a
backup car and finished in the top four before being disqualified due to a
rules infraction. The race was close but Tom Summerfield taking first,
Daniel Mefford in second, Dustin Poldberg in third, Brandon Claussen fourth
and Bryan Smith in fifth.
The Wam Performance Parts Hobby Stock class was chock full of race talent
and determination, but Shannon Anderson proved to be the master of the dirt
again this week as he worked from his sixth row starting spot and cruised
out front where he raced unchallenged to O’Reilly Victory Lane with Jeff
Hansen behind him in second, Corey Madden in third, Merle Bass finishing 4th
and Kurt Hansen finishing out the top five.
The KNOD Sport Mod feature race was littered with mishaps as several
multi-car wrecks cut the class in half before Jesse Sobbing snatched the
lead to cruise to his first feature win at the Shelby County Speedway. The
win, combined with the wreck which took points challengers Dan McKeighan and
Tanner Powers early in the race has all but given the track championship to
Sobbing who only needs to finish next week’s Championship Night race to
clinch the trophy. Dave Hulsebus made a stunning run on the night to finish
second, with Doug Smith, Dennis Cook and Buddy Ray Jones rounding out the
top five.
It was business as usual with the Pizza Ranch stock cars, as they were the
first and only class to stay clean and green for the whole feature race. But
that doesn’t mean the competition wasn’t hot. Tim Bengard raced out to the
early lead but was unable to shake Brian Blessington and Dustin Smith and
while the three battled for the lead, Keith Knop snuck his car into position
to challenge, building a tight 4 pack just in time for a last lap run down.
Bengard took the checkered flag as the drivers pull three wide on the front
stretch with Smith just edging Knop for second and Blessington finishing
fourth before Clay Christian in fifth.
Kyle Wahlert lost his momentum to a slick track as he spun out early in the
Budweiser Late Model feature race, which put him at the back of the pack for
the restart. Corey Zeitner had little trouble working through traffic this
week and claimed the lead early in the race as Wahlert picked his way back
through traffic to finish fourth in front of Barry Sorensen. Corey Zeitner
picks up the win this week with Josh Most in second and Mel Zeitner in
third.
Brandon “Red” Monson had his hot rod on fire in the Pitts Chiropractic
Modified feature as he powered around a slick, spotty track to another win
on the season. JC Wyman finished second and Nick Deal finished 3rd after
being set back to the rear of the pack due to contact with Jeff Jones. Jeff
Anderson finished fourth and Jeff Jones rounded out the top five.
The race season at Shelby County Speedway wraps up next Saturday Night with
Championship Night at the Shelby County Speedway which will also feature the
Good Old Time Racing Association or GOTRA coupes. Hot laps start at 6:30,
racing will be underway at 7 pm.
