Shelby County Speedway Championship Night
By Shannon Lowe

Harlan, IA (Sept. 8) - With a near full moon rising over the east end of Shelby County Speedway, Championship Night racing was underway with the Shelby County Speedway Sport Compacts taking the track later than usual due to extra heat races ran early in the night with GOTRA racers visiting the speedway. Tom “Kat” Summerfield had a rough night with Joe Anderson making contact with him early in the race and a few laps later flying over the turn three embankment. Points leader Bryan Smith also had trouble when a loose wheel had his car stopped on turn two and ending his race. Dustin Poldberg lead most of the green flag laps with the Cass racers close behind. As Randy Cass took the lead, Tom Summerfield found his groove and raced hard from the back of the pack to edge Tim Cass for third with Randy Cass in first, Dirty Dustin Poldberg in second.

Willard Auto Machine Hobby Stock racers took the track with the championship already locked up for the season and with no claims allowed on the final night of points racing at SCS, racers were ready to bring their best to the dirt to challenge Champion Racer Shannon Anderson for the final time this season. Under the green flag, Daniel Smith made an early bid for the lead but Chuck Madden had his hot rod powered up and ready to run and charged out front. As Shannon Anderson worked his way from his 10th starting spot and out to the lead, Chuck Madden lost control and slid low on the track before heading to the pits. Anderson and Daniel Smith battle for the lead for several laps before Anderson settles into the lead, but contact between Smith and Anderson sends Anderson around and the spin out set Anderson back to where he started. Daniel Smith was set back 2 spots for rough driving and Kenny Hansen was moved into the top spot, but with only one lap completed, Smith again made contact with the leader spinning Kenny Hansen on the front stretch before making contact with Anderson again and finishing his night with a smashed radiator. Anderson also finished his night in turn two and made his way back to the pits under his own power. That handed the race over to Corey Madden who finished first with Derrick Rohe finishing second, Jeff Hansen in fourth and Randy Anderson finishing 4th.

KNOD Sport Mods dug in for the first few laps and the most exciting challenge was for the fourth position as Jared Hansen defends it against Tanner Powers and David Hulsebus. Powers used the high side to drive into the second spot around both Hansen and Joe Mefford with Hulsebus driving the low side and landing in third. Jesse Sobbing drove his crazy racing number 99 into third as Hulsebus and Powers drive out into the lead and battle for the top spot. Hulsebus came away with the lead and left Powers to defend second against Sobbing. But a timely caution brings the pack down to parade speeds and Powers was set back two spots for jumping a restart handing second over to Sobbing who struggled to catch Hulsebus. Powers worked to find a line and momentum around Jared Hansen but couldn’t get it done in the four laps remaining and had to settle for fourth behind Hansen in third, Sobbing in second and Hulsebus in first.

The GOTRA racers took the speedway by storm with vintage racing that thrilled fans. Bill Wrich took the early lead before the number 9 hot rod stripped him of it and the battle for first raged between the two. Bill Wrich took the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane with Roger Ruwe in a very close second and James Sylvester in third.

Pizza Ranch Stock cars brought the Championship battle to the dirt with 4 drivers close enough to have a shot at the points race. Andy Miller powered out to an early lead as Jeff Anderson tagged along behind in second. Dustin Smith powered past Miller and Anderson before Anderson drove around Miller with Brian Blessington in tow. Keith Knop was determined not to be left behind in the race and moved around Miller to land in the fourth spot as everyone chased down Smith, the current point champion. Smith pulled away from his challengers as Knop drove up to challenge Blessington for third. A caution sets the pack up for a green white checkered run down but Smith again runs away with the race, with Jeff Anderson finishing second, Brian Blessington, Keith Knop and Tim Bengard round out the top five.

Budweiser Late Model drivers brought their wide bodied rockets onto the Shelby County Speedway and Kyle Wahlert thundered out to the early lead but Barry Sorensen and Corey Zeitner were on the hunt. Sorensen lost his line and Josh Most powered past him and Zeitner took the lead leaving Wahlert to defend second as Most drove hard after him. Most drove with his usual aggressive flair and took the shortest route he could find into the second spot driving through Wahlert spinning him. Both drivers were sent to the back of the pack where Wahlert continued despite damage to his car as Most called it quits on the night. Corey Zeitner went unchallenged the rest of the race with Jeff Segebart in second, Vance Tonak in third, Barry Sorensen finishing fourth.

Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds powered onto the track to finish out the race night at Shelby County Speedway and the racing excitement was heated with point leader Jeff Jones battling for the lead with first Chad Preul and then Big Red Monson. Monson comes away with the lead in his Cyclone Seed and Chemical sponsored race machine and with the field spreading out he raced to a clean victory for the second week in a row with Jeff Jones caught up in lap traffic behind him in second, Tim Plowman in third, and Craig Reetz in fourth and Chad Preul in fifth.

The Shelby County Racers Association now looks forward to the Tiny Lund Races held in two weeks on September 17th, 18th and 19th. Thursday night will be driver’s practice night, with Friday qualifying and Saturday features. Head to www.racescs.com for more details and to pick up registration details.
