Tiny Lund Memorial Races a Huge Success!
By Shannon Lowe

HARLAN, IA (Sptember 22) - The Tiny Lund Memorial proved to be three days of great IMCA dirt track action last weekend as 184 cars signed in on Friday night for qualifying races.  Saturday’s last chance qualifying filled the feature races in every class with eager drivers.

Sport Compacts take the track with a field of 19 cars on a dry slick track and found they had trouble sticking the slick in the corners with more than a couple cars spinning in the first few laps.  Randy Cass made an early dive for the lead chasing the Silver Bullet with David Cotterman behind the wheel.  But Cotterman got caught on the slick track sending him to the back of the field with Taylor Griffen and Tom Summerfield who were also sent to the back because of spins.  On the restart, cars were only able to complete a few laps before contact between Dustin Poldberg and Cory Flanigan brings out another caution and send DPo to the pits with a flat tire.  With only 15 cars continuing the race for first became a family affair with Tim Cass challenging and taking the lead from Randy.  Cotterman regains control of his Silver Bullet and as he gained a feel for the slick track, found the grip he needed to work up into the top five when a bump had him loose on the track again and falling back into the 8th spot while Tim Cass takes the double checkered followed by Tom “Kat” Summerfield, Randy Cass, Ole Olsen and Bryan Smith.

WAM Performance Parts Hobby Stocks found just as much trouble on the slick racing surface, with Daniel Smith going around in turn one of the first lap.  Under the green flag Andy Boeckman takes the top spot but Shannon Anderson stalks him from deeper in the pack.  Another caution set Anderson right on Boeckman’s bumper and on the restart the two cars pull away from the pack racing side by side, Anderson with the edge in the corners and Boeckman the edge on the straightaway.  A storied racing history between these two drivers had them racing within inches of one another but keeping the race clean and competitive.  Kenny Hansen plows through the crowd to race side by side with fellow Audubon racer Derrick Rohe before Jason Kohl dives between them to nose out Hansen.  Trouble with Boeckman’s car leaves Anderson the lead as Boeckman drifts off the track into the pits.  Kenny Hansen drives back around Kohl landing the third spot but not before Rohe and Anderson build a good lead.  Hansen lost the drive as he went high on the final lap slid back finishing out of the top five while Anderson took the double checkers followed by Derrick Rohe in second.

KNOD Sport Mod racers had trouble getting the first lap in on the Tiny Lund Feature event, but managed to get a couple laps in with Jim Hendricks giving Luke Wanniger a side by side run down before Wanniger cruised out in front.  The pack behind them were bunched together running 3 and 4 wide on the slick race surface and trouble on the west end of the track had cars piled up in the corner with Tanner Powers, Mike Brown, Cody Hilgartner, Joe Mefford and Robert Tippery each taking damage and taking the restart from the rear of the pack.  Dave Hulsebus used the restart to slingshot passed Wanniger, powering into a cushioned lead.  Wanniger sprinted after Hulsebus and the two ran away from the pack chasing the tail end at the halfway mark.   The race for third heated up as Jesse Sobbing stalked his way in to challenge Dalton Dingman and as Sobbing crossed the score line in third a caution was thrown bringing second place Wanniger into reach.  Time limit warning went out to drivers as they cruised the track on yet another caution and fans cheered the announcement hoping the drivers would get down to business and finish the eleven laps remaining.  The race for first stayed competitive with Wanniger reeling in Hulsebus and retaking the lead but Hulsebus still driving hard and looking for a faster line on the track.  Wanniger loses no momentum and builds his lead as lap after lap passes under his hot rod and takes the double checkered with Hulsebus behind him in second.

Pizza Ranch Stock Cars bring heated racing to the speedway with Bill Osbahr taking the early lead but Keith Knop driving hard to juggle the top spots with him.  Tim Bengard throws his car into the second spot challenging Knop as Donavan Smith moves in to challenge him.  The race continues clean with hard racing around every corner as the leaderboard constantly changes.  Knop is pushed back to third by Bengard and Smith but he continues the chase using the high side.  Bill Osbahr drives in low trying to pick pocket Knop for the third spot and the two reel in  Smith and Bengard.  The top four cars pull away from the pack and Osbahr drives inside Smith and the four leaders make it four wide around the west end of the track with Bengard maintaining the lead, Knop and Osbahr splitting the difference around him on every corner.  Knop slides his 10x hot rod too high on the track losing ground but still in the race as the top four pull even farther out in front of the pack.  With two laps to go, the drivers fall into single file before Osbar and Knop drive high.  Knop looses power on his car finishing only fifth with Tim Bengard taking the checkered flag, followed by Donovan Smith, Bill Osbahr, Doug Adamy.

The Budweiser Late Models thunder onto the speedway and but trouble plagues their Tiny Lund Feature Race as a caution only two laps in the race stall the feature event as multiple attempts to start the race behind the leader Mike Collins fail with the third attempt causing a multiple car stack up in the back of the pack.  Mike Collins was put to the back of the pack so the race could continue.  Back under the green flag the drivers could only complete a few more laps before Ian Haas rode the guardrail pulling parts of his car loose and leaving a string of debris around the track.  Corey Zeitner had quietly driven into the number one spot and on this restart things seemed to be going smoothly but the trouble wasn’t over yet.  Josh Most and Vance Tonack tangled in turns three and four bringing out another caution and with 29 laps to go fans hoped it would be the last.  Jeremy Hodapp used the start to lessen the distance between second and first and held on to Corey Zeitners rear push bar with determination.  As Zeitner worked into lap traffic the halfway point was reached with cars spread around the entire track creating a scorers nightmare but the race continued clean until Ron Tex, Jr found himself up and over the back stretch embankment and was forced to continue from the back of the pack on yet another restart.  Corey Zeitner led the pack the rest of the way to the double checkers with Jeremy Hodapp in second, Jeff Segebart in third, Mel Zeitner in fourth and Ryan Griffith in fifth.

The Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds took the track with nightly time limits encroaching rapidly and with 25 cars taking the green flag the drivers would have their work cut out for them to race clean enough to finish in time.  Brandon “Red” Monson continued the momentum he picked up during Friday night’s qualifying races, sprinting from his fourth place starting spot into second in no time and despite multiple cautions he continues the drive powering out front with 30 laps to go while Jeff Stephens drives hard landing the third spot just before another caution called due to a spring left rolling out on the front stretch.  Jeff Jones also driving hard landing in the top five with both looking to challenge Monson, but Stephens looks too high for his line and slides over the back stretch embankment.  The restart has Chris Abelson powering into the lead on in turns one and two with Jeff Jones also looking to challenge.  Abelson and Monson tangle in turns three and four as Monson tries to regain the spot and the resulting spin has Abelson restarting from the back and Monson headed pit side with damage to his car.  Jake Neal worked his way up through the pack to best Jeff Jones and Bob Zoubeck before trying out his dance moves spinning on the front stretch and landing dead in the water in front of his fans in the grandstands.  That handed the lead back to Zoubeck who refused to squander it away and proceeded to build a cushion between him and Jeff Jones in second place.  Drivers throughout the pack struggled to find grip on a track  that looked smooth as glass from the stands.  Zoubeck continued to gain ground as the racers spread out on the track.  Jones moves into lap traffic as the laps tick away but a spin out in turn four brings the pack all together setting up a green white checkered run down where anything could happen.  Jeff Jones uses the restart to push Zoubeck but is unable to catch him and finishes second.

The checkered flag has dropped on the racing season at the Shelby County Speedway, but drivers, officials and fans look forward to fantastic dirt track action in 2010.
