Brooklyn Raceway Fall Nationals
By: Dennis Grabenbauer

BROOKLYN, IA (September 29) - With all eyes watching the changing Iowa weather throughout the weekend, the First Annual Figure 8 Capital of the World Fall Nationals at the Brooklyn Raceway took place this past weekend in Brooklyn Iowa.  Drivers throughout Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois were on hand to challenge the man made figure 8 racecourse built out side of Brooklyn in the former cornfield of promoters Archie and Sally Kuntz.

One hundred and seven race teams were on hand to do battle on this 1/5th mile figure 8 race course.  “We just didn’t know what to expect,” said promoter Archie Kuntz.  “I have always wanted to host an event of this nature, so this year we decided to give it a try and we think we put on a program that everyone was happy with and will want to come back for more next year.”

Friday was to be the opening night but “mother nature” would have other plans.  Rain would cause Friday’s program to be moved to Saturday and Saturday’s to Sunday.  “I know we might of lost some race teams who didn’t travel a lot of distance because being unsure of the weather, but you just have to put on a show with what cars you have, and I think the best of the best was here and the racing would be close and very competitive.”

After a full night of Saturday qualifying would take place, the top twelve qualifiers in each division for Sunday’s Fall National feature events would be set as drivers and crews were getting prepared to become first time national winners at the speedway.  The top twelve qualifiers in each division would be introduced in front of the covered grandstand so everyone could meet the drivers up close that would be in competition.   “By introducing the drivers to the fans it brings the fans closer to the drivers. This is our way of thanking the drivers for coming and racing with us,” concluded Kuntz.
