Moffitt Debut with JGR Not Quite What He Expected 

GRIMES, IA (April 1, 2010) – Brett Moffitt’s debut in the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) Toyota and the opening event for the 2010 NASCAR K&N Pro Series at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Greenville, NC, was not quite what the young NASCAR competitor was hoping for and not what his new team was expecting either. 

Moffitt practiced well early last Saturday, keeping the #20 JGR prepared Toyota in the top five during all of the practice sessions, increasing his speeds from the first session during both the second and final practice sessions.  When qualifying began, Moffitt was the 11th car out to qualify, and after his qualifying laps, he had the fifth fastest qualifying time; however, by the end of qualifying, Moffitt’s time was only good enough for a 15th starting position.  Commenting after the qualifying session was over, Moffitt said, “We made some adjustments after the last practice session and before qualifying.  We went the wrong way and did not qualify as well as expected.  Hopefully, we will get it figured out and be able to race better.” 

From the start, Moffitt was able to hold his own, constantly running in the top 15 and often almost racing into the top 10.  Keeping his nose clean, Moffitt continued to stay out of trouble, using that cool and collected racing demeanor he has shown throughout his short racing career, even during the ten caution flags that flew in the first 132 of the scheduled 150 laps.  During a lap 137 restart Moffitt, who was in 14th and restarted from the seventh row outside, ran out of luck.  Ryan Truex, from outside the front row, stumbled as he restarted. The result was all the cars in the outside lane behind him bunched up, with several of the top-10 cars ending up involved in the pile-up that followed.  Included in the crash were the JGR duo of Moffitt and Max Gresham, Ty Dillon, and defending NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion Jason Bowles.  Though he was able to drive away, Moffitt’s night was over, due to extensive radiator damage.  Official scoring at the end of the race would show Moffitt finishing in a disappointing 25th position, one spot behind his JGR teammate Gresham.   

Moffitt commented after the race, “We really never found a setup that the car was happy with.  I couldn’t drive the car through the middle of the corners the way I wanted to, and that made coming off the corners difficult, too.  I can guarantee you, my team will work hard all week this week, and barring any more bad luck, we will be right back in the hunt next week”. 

Moffitt and team will compete in the second of ten NASCAR K&N Pro Series events next week, during the South Boston 150 at the South Boston Speedway located in South Boston, VA.  Following the South Boston event, Moffitt and the JGR #20 team will head west, participating in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West event on Thursday, April 8^th at the Phoenix International Speedway.  Then, Moffitt will make his home track debut in the JGR #20 on Saturday, May 23^rd at the Iowa Speedway, Newton, IA.
