Gustin, Murphy, Jerovetz, Murty top Boone Frostbuster
features
BOONE, Iowa (April 4) – Jimmy Gustin towed all the way to Texas to get his
first IMCA Modified feature win of the season.
He raced much closer to home to get his second.
Gustin sped past long time leader Dan Ratajczak following a lap 20 re-start,
then led the last five times around the track in topping Saturday’s $1,000
to win Frostbuster special main event at Boone Speedway.
Ratajczak had set the fast pace from the second circuit on, pulling away
from the rest of the field before each of the cautions that punctuated the
Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying event.
Gustin, who’d journeyed to 281 Speedway in Texas last month to get an early
start to his season, finally caught the right groove to catch Ratajczak.
Josh Gilman, Jeff Stephens, Jonathan Snyder and Ratajczak would complete the
top five.
The season opening Frostbuster brought 164 cars to Boone. Defending track
champion Trent Murphy was the $500 IMCA Sunoco Stock Car winner, Wisconsin
visitor Troy Jerovetz captured the $300 Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod
checkers and Nick Murty paced the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks in their $250 to
win show.
Murphy was most of a straightaway ahead when a caution bunched the Stock Car
field back up with seven laps to go, but he quickly reasserted himself and
was six car lengths ahead of Mike VanGenderen at the fin¬ish.
VanGenderen ran second and Damon Murty ran third the last 15 laps. Dustin
Smith and Donavon Smith followed.
Jerovetz took over the lead on the 13th of 20 SportMod circuits and had to
hold Geoff Olson off at the finish, winning by half a car length.
The only caution of the race came before the first lap was scored. Scott
Davis, early leader Cody Hennings and Jared Timmerman followed Jerovetz and
Olson across the stripe.
Murty impressed in winning the Hobby main, running in front the last 12 of
15 laps.
Chris Hupp, Nyle Godwin, John Watson and Donnie Gustoff completed the top
five.
First night for track points at Boone is April 10.
