By: Larry Bontz
WEST LIBERTY, IOWA (May 22) - For the first time ever the International
Motor Contest Association Imca Late Model Association IMCA race cars rolled
through the grounds here at the Muscatine County Fairgrounds Saturday night,
and while there were several new drivers on hand to do battle, Andy Eckrich
showed everyone the short way around as he won the twenty five lapper in
convincing style. Eckrich the youngest of the three Eckrich racing brothers
easily won the a-main finishing well ahead of second place finisher who ran
a strong race in his own right six year veteran Mick Wiele. Jeremiah "hot
rod' Hurst enjoyed a stellar run finishing third, with Ron Boyse coming home
fourth in a stellar performance in his restrictor plate machine, and Mike
Klinkhammer who has climbed back in the cockpit of a race car and ran
fifth,an excellent run in his own right after a two year abscense, running a
restrictor plate motor as well..
Fast Larry Herring passed Dean Mahlstadt on lap 8,then survived a couple of
cautions in the end to win the twenty lap open wheel modified feature his
first of the season. The sixteen year veteran wheeling the Bob Herrington
owned race car was followed across the line by Johnny Spaw in second,Ryan
Dolan third, Todd Hansen fourth, with Brad Dierks fifth.
Matt Greiner seems to have things going in the right direction as he is now
two for two in the win collumn winning the fifteen lap stock car feature for
the second week in a row. Justin Speers lead the first seven laps, then
Scotty Pratt took the lead at the point for two eight through ten before
Matt Greiner flexed his muscle moved around for the lead and on for the win.
David Brandies was second, Greg Gill third, Justin Speers fourth, with
Scotty Pratt rounding out the top five.
Dubuques' Jarret Franzen passed Rick Housman on the tenth lap and went on to
win the fifteen lap b-mod feature for his first win of the season. Jason
Speers was second, Brad Tyler third, Zack Less fourth, with Rick Housman
having a fine outing tonight placing fifth.
Shawn Slaughter grabbed the lead from Tyler Kelly on lap four, then motored
on to win the ten lap flyer feature his second one in a row. Tyler Kelly who
finished second and graduates tommorrow (Sunday) Parnell High School enjoyed
a nice graduation weekend with a win at Farley on Friday and second at West
Liberty on Saturday. Rob Miller was third,Rob Axsom fourth with Drew Brooke
fifth. No late models next saturday may 29th as there will be a 1000 to win
modified special at the speedway, along with the stock cars,b-mods and flyer
divisions I speak for everyone here at SPI as we wish veteran race acar
driver Bruce Hanford a speedy recovery. Heres hoping all goes well with your
