DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 28, 2010) – The Davenport Speedway kicked off Memorial Day weekend with exciting racing action. The fans were treated first-time winners, last lap passes, and near perfect weather conditions. Ray Guss Jr. returned to tbe winner’s circle in the Petersen Plumbing & Heating, IMCA Late Model action. Guss was able to get by Bret Diercks on lap seventeen and hold on for the win. The victory was Guss’ first point race win at Davenport in 2010. The race was halted briefly by a red flag for a 3-car crash on lap 22. Mark Preston, Cory Goldbeck, and Mike Zemo Jr. were involved in the wreck. All three were able to walk away from the accident. When the race resumed, Guss drove on to the win, Bret Diercks was able to hold second, but Mike Murphy Jr. used the restart to launch himself up to a third place finish. Matt Ryan took fourth and Kevin Blum fifth. Guss, Diercks, and Preston were heat race winners. Doug Crampton led only the last one hundred feet of the Goacher Towing Pro Mod main, just enough for his third straight Pro Mod win. Crampton started tenth and had to use every lap and every inch of the racetrack to get the win Thad Wilson had taken the lead on lap nine, but came up just a little short at the checkers. Wilson did everything he could to hold off Crampton, but would have to settle for a disappointing second. Bob Dominacki led early in the race but would fade to a third place finish. John Bull and Tim Arp completed the top five. The Koehler Electric Street Stock feature came down to a battle of two drivers. Cary Brown took the lead of the race on lap three and held it until the white flag lap. Matt Werner tried to pass Brown a couple of times on the inside, with no success. Coming to the white flag, Werner went outside of Brown, took the lead, and took the win. Brown held on for second with Ron Marks Jr. third. Jeremy Marquette and Bruce Fosdyck Jr. finished fourth and fifth. The EMS IMCA Modified feature started with a bang, well at least a loud crash. A multi-car pile-up, coming to take the green, really reduced the field. When the race restarted, Terry Rentfro went to the lead. However, Rentfro would be involved in the next yellow and have to go to the pits. Jerry Pratt took over the lead and held the spot all the way to the checkers. Ray Cox Jr started tenth, but would end up in second. Todd Dykema, Josh Starr, and Greg Wilson rounded out the top five and were the only other cars running at the race’s end. Dominic Bates brought home the win in an entertaining Legend Car feature. Cars were moving in and out of the top five throughout the entire race. The only position that didn’t change was the leader. Bates jumped into the lead from the outside pole and led all fifteen laps. The victory was his first in a Legend Car. Matt Montieth finished second and was followed Craig Peekenschnieder, Jeremy Meyer, and Mike Mueller, in that order. Mike Morrow blistered the field in the 4 Stock feature event. Unfortunately his car did pass post-race inspection and was disqualified. Kevin Haury, who had led early in the race was credited with the win. Luke Thurness was scored second, with Andy Maberry third, and Bill Morrow fourth.
