Moffitt Earns Fourth Consecutive Top-Five Finish 

GRIMES, IOWA (August 4, 2010) – Brett Moffitt, Joe Gibbs Racing development driver, recorded his fourth consecutive top-five finish in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.  Moffitt qualified eighth and finished a hard-fought third in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series 125 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH.  The race was the first time the Grimes, Iowa, native took to the short-track in southern New Hampshire. 

“Lee was definitely an interesting place,” Moffitt said.  “The pavement was pretty well worn-in, which made for very little grip.” 

After initial motor troubles forced Moffitt to miss a majority of the first practice session, Moffitt’s crew was able to make the adjustments needed, earning him the ninth fastest time in the second practice session. 

Moffitt backed up his practice speeds by qualifying eighth fastest for the drop of the green flag. 

The leaders spun on lap 54, forcing Moffitt to avoid getting caught up in the accident.  He escaped with only minor right front damage, but the result was a slight fender rub.  Spotters reported smoke from the tire, and after checking it as best as they could from the pits and the spotter’s tower, they made a judgment call that the tire would probably go the distance and did not bring Moffitt into the pits.   

“We were pretty worried about the fender rubbing, because it was enough to produce some tire smoke from that point on, and the smoke was really noticeable under cautions,” Moffitt said.   

In the closing laps, Moffitt battled closely with Ryan Truex and Cole Whitt for third position.  Moffitt found himself in fourth position after a red flag delay following a later accident, and with only nine laps remaining, Moffitt was able to slip underneath Eddie MacDonald coming out of the final turn on the last lap to finish third. 

“We got pretty much everything out of this car,” Moffitt said.  “We struggled off the truck, but Bryant and everyone did an awesome job getting us up to speed.  We were fortunate early on to get through the wreck without major damage, and we learned that our concern about the right front tire had been well justified.  Some of the rubber had melted, and the cords were visible after the race, but the tire went the distance, and they made the right call.” 

Moffitt’s finish solidifies him in third place in the year-end Championship standings, 100 points behind the leader, Truex, with three events remaining. 

“It’s disappointing that we weren’t able to make up any points on the leader,” Moffitt said.  “However, I feel confident about the remainder of the season and believe we can still make up the ground. We were very fast when we tested at Gresham, I enjoy Loudon, and we won at Dover last year, so nothing is even close to over yet.”
