Four Score: Jac Haudenschild Wins at Clay County Fair
Speedway while Jason Meyers Retakes the World of Outlaws Point Lead
SPENCER, IA. (September 17, 2010) - Jac Haudenschild has won at numerous
tracks from coast-to-coast in his career, though one he had not won at was
Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa. He changed that on Friday night
as he bested fellow Hall of Famer Steve Kinser to score his fourth win of
the 2010 campaign and his first at Clay County in the Arnold Motor Supply
Shootout.
For Haudenschild, who started fifth in the 30-lap event, the $10,000 triumph
was the 55th of his career with the World of Outlaws, as he remains 10th on
the series all-time win list. The native of Wooster, Ohio has won twice in
the state of Iowa this season with the first coming at Knoxville Raceway
back in June.
"It always feels good to win," said Haudenschild. "I have to thank my car
owner Lon Carnahan. He doesn't get a chance to come to many races and he was
here tonight. I wish he could come to more races, but he has to stay home
and make money so we can keep racing."
In what is the closest three-way championship battle in World of Outlaws
history, Jason Meyers used a ninth-place finish to move back on top of the
standings over Joey Saldana by five markers, with Steve Kinser third, 42
points back. Just nine races remain on the 2010 calendar.
Haudenschild used a run on the high side of turns three and four in the
Owens-Corning Fiberglass XXX on the 23rd lap to dart past Kinser to take the
top spot. On the 20th lap, he employed an impressive pair of moves to snag
first the third spot from Donny Schatz on the high side of turn two, before
diving under Sammy Swindell on the back straightaway to move into second and
set his sights on Kinser, whom he would catch just a couple laps later.
Haudenschild would lead the final eight laps.
"I was getting through the lapped cars pretty good," shared the winner. "I
got trapped a couple of times and when I got by Steve (Kinser) I knew he
would come back pretty tough. The car felt great all night. The crew did a
good job and had this car running fast."
Haudenschild finished third at Clay County Fair Speedway last season after a
ninth-place effort at the high-banked 3/8-mile in 2008. Since his return
from a broken hand last month, Haudenschild has finished in the Top-10 in
eight of 11 races.
"We've run pretty good here in the few times we have been here, so to win
feels really good," Haudenschild said. "It's always neat to win at a place
you have never won at it. We're pretty fast right now and everyone is
working pretty good together."
Kinser led the first 22 laps on Friday night en route to the runner-up
finish in the Bass Pro Shops Maxim, which marked his best-ever finish at
Clay County Fair Speedway. After starting on the pole, he jumped out to a
quick lead and was in lapped traffic by just the seventh lap. Kinser was out
front on a couple of double file restarts and chose the low line each time
quickly jumping out to a lead. The final restart of the night on the 19 th
lap was a single file restart and again he opened a lead as Sammy Swindell
and Donny Schatz battled for second.
"I should have gotten to the top I guess," stated Kinser after the race.
"Sometimes that's the bad thing about leading the race, that the track
changes. I knew the bottom was getting slow and loose down there. I probably
should have went up there and tried it, but didn't and it was too late."
Donny Schatz edged out Sammy Swindell at the line for the third spot as the
pair drag raced off the fourth turn. For Schatz it was his 32nd Top-Five
finish of the season aboard the Armor All/STP J&J. In four starts at Clay
County Fair Speedway with the World of Outlaws, Schatz has won twice, while
finishing sixth or better in all four starts. He gained some ground in the
World of Outlaws championship standings and is 108 points out of the lead as
he chases his fifth consecutive title.
"It was a good race to the line," said Schatz. "I wasn't sure if it was
going to go our way or not. We had a good enough car to finish third, but I
wish we could have gotten up there and gotten a win. We'll just go on to
tomorrow night and see if we can get a win up there."
The runner-up performance for Kinser was his series leading 52nd Top-10
finish of the season. He also leads the series with 36 Top-Fives as he
chases his record 21st title. He moved to within 42 markers of Jason Meyers
with nine races remaining on the season.
"We've been running good," noted Kinser. "We had a little bit of trouble at
the Gold Cup and got upside down. We were leading the race the first night
and broke a wheel. We came back and finished second on the night when the
points didn't count. We were right there tonight and I should have switched
places on the race track."
Sammy Swindell ran among the Top-Three for most of the 30-lap contest and
ended up fourth in the Big Game Treestands Maxim. Paul McMahan was fifth in
his first start at Clay County Fair Speedway since 2008 aboard the Great
Clips Maxim.
Mark Dobmeier finished sixth in the Senske & Son J&J, with Kraig Kinser
seventh in the Quaker State Maxim. Craig Dollansky, who was promoting the
race along with his wife Julie, who was born and raised in Spencer, Iowa,
came home eighth in the Big Game Treestands Maxim. Jason Meyers was ninth,
which coupled with his third-place effort in time trials, which earned him
three bonus points, helped him take a five-point lead over Joey Saldana in
the standings as each of those drivers chases their first title. Lucas Wolfe
rounded out the Top-10 in the Allebach Racing Maxim.
Saldana, who entered Friday night as the World of Outlaws point leader,
raced his way into the main event through the Last Chance Showdown and
earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award coming from 21st to finish
11th.
The World of Outlaws return to action on Saturday, September 18 at Deer
Creek Speedway in Minnesota.
CLAY COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY NOTES
•FAST QUALIFIER: Paul McMahan paced the 34 cars that took time with an AMB
i.t. timed lap around the semi-banked 3/8-mile oval at 13.925 seconds at
96.948 miles per hour. For his qualifying effort McMahan earned five bonus
points. The next four fastest qualifiers also earned bonus points,
including: Sam Hafertepe Jr. (4), Jason Meyers (3), Lucas Wolfe (2) and
Danny Lasoski (1).
•CLAY COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY QUALIFYING WINNERS: Jac Haudenschild, Mark
Dobmeier, Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell won heat races. Steve Kinser won
the Dash. Chad Kemenah won the Last Chance Showdown.
•PENALTY REVISED: Following an appeal of the penalties issued to Brad Sweet
and Kasey Kahne Racing following an incident on August 21 at Nodak Speedway
in Minot, North Dakota, a decision to revise the penalties has been reached
by the World Racing Group Appeal Commission. Sweet's suspension has been
reduced from five races to three, with the $2,500 fine issued to him being
eliminated, while he remains on probation for the remainder of the 2010
season. Additionally the $2,500 fine to Kasey Kahne Racing stands along with
probation for the remainder of the 2010 season.
