Iowa's Hamilton County Speedway under new management
WEBSTER CITY, IOWA (March 11) - Larry Flaws of Webster City has been
selected to manage the Hamilton County Speedway for its 73rd year of racing
according to officials from the Hamilton County Fairgrounds.
The Hamilton County Fair Board will be the promoter for the 2011 racing year
with Flaws working part time as manager of the track. Flaws will continue to
be the Assistant Director of the Recreation & Public Grounds Department,
where he has been employed since 1977.
Flaws is a native of Webster City. He and his wife, Leslie, have three
daughters: Allie, Ashley and Haley.
Flaws brings considerable racing experience to the position, having been
involved with Hobby Stocks, Stock Cars and Modifieds over the years. He was
crew chief for Dean Flaws Jr., and also worked as Technical Director in
other racing series for six years.
Hamilton County residents are well acquainted with the Flaws name in racing.
Flaw’s father, Dean, his Uncle Bob, his brother, Dean Jr., and his cousin,
R.D., have raced at the local speedway since 1950.
Dean Flaws in the #3 car and Bob Flaws in the #V6 car were always crowd
favorites.
The Flaws group did not confine their racing talents to just local action
but competed at tracks all over the Midwest.
Dean Flaws also drove a midget racer in the early 1970s.
The Fair Board Racing Committee consisting of Randy Chalfant, Darrell Hay,
John Koop and Mark Claude selected Flaws as the best candidate among the six
applicants for his enthusiasm, experience and proposed improvements to the
racing program.
According to Holly Myers, Fairgrounds Manager, opening night for the track
is slated for April 23.
The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour powered by Swan Energy will
invade the historic Hamilton County Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 20, as part
of the Hunt for the USMTS National Championship.
Last year, Ryan Gustin fended of the challenges of Kelly Shryock early in
the main event, then beat Jason Hughes to the finish line to score his 13th
win of the 2010 season in front of a partisan crowd that cheered on the
19-year-old who got his start at the historic half-mile oval several years
earlier.
In addition to the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and USRA Karl Performance
Parts B-Mods, the Hamilton County Speedway will also feature Hornets, Hobby
Stocks, Modifieds and Late Models as part of the weekly Saturday night
program where gates open at 4:30 p.m. with hot laps starting at 6:30 and
racing to follow.
