Savage
gets first career mod win
Strothman gets second win, Wenig wins second straight, Smith, Gillenwater
also win
By Dewain Hulett for Lee County Speedway
DONNELLSON, Iowa (July
15, 2011) – Brandon Savage had come close on several occasions but had never
been able to close the door on a IMCA Modified win. Friday night, he slammed
the door shut with a convincing win at Lee County Speedway.
Other winners included
Jim Gillenwater, IMCA Sport Mods; Corey Strothman, IMCA Stock Cars; Jake
Wenig, Hobby Stocks and Darin Smith, Wild Things.
Savage, who started
fourth in the feature event, followed Rob Kirchner to second place at the
drop of the green flag. Kirchner was able to hold off the eventual winner
for nine laps, but a great move splitting a lapped car and Kirchner coming
off turn two gave Savage the lead. He was never threatened the rest of the
way in the win. Josh Foster came from 10th to second, while
Dennis LaVeine rounded out the top three.
The race with the most
drama came in the IMCA Sport Mods. Though Gillenwater won the race easily at
the strip, the victory didn’t come without some work. Dean Kratzer led the
first nine laps and had a comfortable lead in the 15 lap race when he lost
power in turns one and two. Rodger Dresden inherited the lead on the restart
and held it for two laps before Gillenwater took the lead. Dresden held on
for second, while Joe Bliven was again the highest finishing crate motor in
third.
Casey Mehaffy continues
to improve in the Wild Things, as he led the first three laps of the event
before Darin Smith took the lead out of turn four on lap four. Smith was
never really threatened the rest of the way, though Chuck Fullenkamp was
close enough to pounce if the opportunity arose. It didn’t and Smith got the
win, while Fullenkamp settle for second. Bill Michel rounded out the top
three.
Wenig only had to survive
one caution and was never threatened, as he won his fifth feature of the
season in the Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks. Wenig has five finishes at Lee
County this season, all five have been wins. Matt Gavin, in a rare
appearance at Lee County, picked up a solid second place finish, while Jim
Lynch came home in third.
In the Stock Car feature
Strothman started on the pole and led every lap. He controlled the entire
race, having a half straightway or more advantage most of the way, but Matt
Greiner made the race exciting down the stretch. Greiner got to second with
four laps remaining and began to slowly real in the leader. He couldn’t make
the pass, but he did give Strothman a bit of a push across the start finish
line, as he settled for second. Jeff Mueller was third.
