COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (JULY 23, 2011) - Point race action continues at CJ
Speedway with one driver get his first win at the CJ track. Tom Goble,
Burlington, picked up his first late model win Friday, July 22. Troy
Phillpott (mod lites), Muscatine and Dave Hemsted (stock cars), Lone Tree
both picked up their second wins at the CJ Speedway season while Steve
Stewart (modifieds), Burlington and Tyler Whalen (4 cylinders), Riverside,
both raced to their seventh wins this year.
Coming Up
Coming this week at CJ Speedway will be double the racing during the Louisa
County Fair week when the Cornbelt Clash returns for a $3000 to win 35 lap
late model feature event on Thursday, July 28. Also racing will be
modifieds, IMCA Sport Compacts and Mod Lites. Gates open at 5:30 with racing
at 7:30. Then come back on Friday, July 29 for more exciting point race
action in all classes.
Tyler Whalen continues to show his dominance in the IMCA Sport Compact
division. Whalen took the lead from John Whalen on lap seven of the ten lap
feature and went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths ahead
of James Roose. Whalen also continues to hold the lead in the point race
with 370 points followed by Merv Chandler with 354.
Justin Buchholz took the early lead in the ten car mod lite feature leading
the first seven laps. Troy Phillpott tried to pass Buchholz on the inside on
lap six but couldnt complete the move. Then on the next lap he tried again
to get by Buchholz on the backstretch, this time completing the pass and
taking the lead. Phillpott would work through lap traffic and go on to take
the checkered flag for the second time this year. Buchholz would finish
second and Jason Masengarb would move up to finish third. Robert Guss leads
the point race with 355 followed by Troy Phillpott with 318.
Ten modifieds took to the track with Mark Winkel taking the early lead. A
caution on lap three of the twelve lap race allowed for six time winner
Steve Stewart to get past Winkel for the lead. As Stewart was pulling away
from the field a battle for second provided plenty of action between Winkel,
Tim Sands and Shaune Lewis. It was bumper to bumper action in the battle for
second as Stewart developed a 1/2 track lead over the field. With two laps
to go , Lewis would get by Sands and followed Stewart and Winkel across the
finish line to take third. Sands currently holds a 11 point lead over
Stewart 388 to 376. Mark Winkel follows in third.
Dave Hemsted took the lead from Jim Redmann on lap nine of the fourteen car
IMCA Stock Car feature and went on to take the checkered flag for the second
time this year. Redmann led the field for the first eight laps before going
off of turn three giving the lead to Hemsted. The red flag was brought out
on lap twelve for Tad Payne who rolled six or seven times coming out of turn
one. When racing resumed it was a father and son battle for the final four
laps with dad taking the win over son John. Cole Simmons moved up from his
fifth row start to finish third. Payne would still hold the lead in the
point race with 366 followed by Cole Simmons with 353.
The final race of the night saw Burlingtons Tom Goble picking up his first
win. Goble took the lead from his front row start and never looked back. Jay
Chenoweth would follow to finish second. Chenoweth leads the point race with
190 points followed by Wink with 175.
