Rogers wins exciting feature at Norton
By Mike Hughes
NORTON, KS (May 6)—Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, KS, was able to dodge the
weather to get in racing action Saturday evening, May 6.
The IMCA Stock Car division saw its fifth different feature winner in five races
held at the ˝-mile oval this season and had fans on the edge of their seat the
entire 20 laps. Kensington’s Josh Hudson led the opening lap but suffered a flat
tire on lap 2 and stopped on the track to bring out a caution. Tyler Hahn led
the field on the restart with Caleb Peters and Jason Rogers right behind. The
threesome swapped positions several times until the second and final caution
came out on lap 12 when Jason Davis spun. Peters led the field back to green but
was passed by Rogers 2 laps later. Peters took the lead back on the following
lap, but Rogers retook the top spot and held on by half a car-length at the
checkers. Hahn finished third, followed by J.R. McCreery and Hudson, who worked
his way back to fifth. Heat race winners were Cory Struckhoff and Hudson.
Oberlin’s David Murray Jr. won his third IMCA Modified feature at Elmwood Park
Speedway this season, holding off a late race charge by Tim Watts. Several
cautions throughout the race kept the field close, with the final caution waving
on lap 17. Watts tried to get around Murray but was unable to make the pass and
settled for the runner-up spot. Jason Schoenberger, Wes O’Bannon and Robby
Haines rounded out the top five. Randy Porter and Murray won the two heat races.
Wade Wagenblast of Deshler, NE, found his way to victory lane for the second
time this season as he won the 15-lap caution free IMCA Hobby Stock main event.
Brent Schoen led the first 4 laps before Wagenblast took a lead he would not
relinquish. Dustin McClurg stayed within striking distance of Wagenblast but had
to settle for second, followed by Kelly Karnopp, Brent Schoen and heat one
winner Brady Schoen. Wagenblast won the other heat race.
Norton duo John Annon & Josh Wonderly led all 10 laps in the Cruiser feature to
win their second main event of the year. A caution on lap 9 set up a
green-white-checkered finish but the Norton duo held on for the victory. Nick &
Tim Horn finished second, trailed by Wes & Chuck Eagleburger. Heat race winners
were Annon & Wonderly and Mike Hockemeier & Jim Ellis.
Racing action returns to Elmwood Park Speedway Saturday night, May 27, when the
regular four divisions will be joined by the Late Models. Race time is 7:00 p.m.
