Lakeside Speedway Hosts 'Old Fashioned Barn Burner!'
by: Larry Lowrey
KANSAS CITY Ks. (May 26, 2006) - The Modified Division hosted a good ole
fashioned 'barn burner' on Friday night at Lakeside Speedway.
John Allen had a tough go of things. After finishing his heat race, he
decided that his motor just didn't have what it would take to win and made a
change of engines between the heat and feature.
The change is exactly what the doctor ordered as John Allen went on to win the
Modified A Main. It wasn't that easy though.
Current points leader, Kerry Davis led for most of the A Main. Allen would sit
in the 3rd and 4th position during the race. About halfway through the event,
Allen decided the high line was going to take him to the front. He was right.
Late in the race Allen would get by Davis on the high side. The two would shoot
it out. On the last lap the two would have contact on the front stretch. Chad
Lyle was able to close up on the two and make it a three car race on the white
flag lap.
Heading into turn four Allen bobbled a little, Davis made a run on the low line
and the two sprinted to the line. As Allen crossed first, Chad Lyle slipped in
for 2nd and Kerry Davis fell to 3rd as the checkers fell.
Tim Karrick finished in the fourth spot, while Jeff Herbers had his most
promising run of the season in 5th position.
In life when something happens that you think happened before either in a
thought or dream is called a deja vu. Friday night in the Grand National
division they had a deja vu of the opening night as Gene Claxton and Chad Clancy
finished 1 and 2 on the night.
It almost didn't happen that way though.
Chad Lyle, the feature winner from a week ago, made a good run to 2nd spot. On a
restart at lap 16, Lyle made a daring move to the high side. Momentum carried
Lyle to the cushion of the track the car corrected for a moment and then
launched into the wall as he got back on the gas.
It was another top performance from the 2005 champion. Claxton, recovering form
a sub par performance a week ago, went to the front from the pole and led all of
the 20 laps.
Chad Clancy gave everything he had to catch up to Claxton, but couldn't get the
job done.
Finishing in the 3rd spot was Keith Cobb Jr. Each week Cobb has been coming home
with a top 5 finish. Tim Billings and Allan Lawrence rounded out the top 5.
Brian Mills finished 2nd just a week ago in the Factory Stock A Main. He was
happy with the outcome but just how happy? He knew that he could do better.
Friday night at Lakeside Speedway he showed how much better it could get. Mills
won the Factory Stock A Main!
Having to work through the front half of the field, Mills worked his way to the
second spot. Not to be content, he closed the gap on the leader at the time,
Brandon Bradford. Lap after lap the closer he would get, until lap number 8
after a restart used the low line to his advantage and took the lead from
Bradford. He would not give up the lead for the next 7 laps.
This would be Mills first win on the 2006 season.
Young driver, Jake Newman, continued his good fortune on the season with a solid
2nd place finish. Rounding the top 5 was Brandon Bradford, Buzz Kaster and last
week's feature winner, Mike Taylor.
