Nobody able to collect Wakeeney bonus
By Mike Hughes
WAKEENEY, KS (May 29, 2006) - Wakeeney (KS) promoter Rod Bencken offered a bonus
winner’s check to any driver in their division that could win the feature race
both nights, Sunday and Monday, May 28-29, during the 6th Annual 2-day Memorial
Challenge. And after racing action was complete Monday evening, Bencken did not
have to write an extra check.
Russell’s Jeremy Zorn dominated the IMCA Modified feature as he led all 20 laps
enroute to the checkers. Caution flags on laps 3 and 7 bunched the field for a
restart, but on both occasions, Zorn drove away, leaving four drivers to battle
for second. Ronnie Hill was able to take the runner-up spot over Nate Schaben,
Craig Colgin and Rob Day. Heat race winners were John Fabrizius, Schaben and
Hill.
Caleb Peters of Oberlin also led all 20 laps to score the victory in the IMCA
Stock Car feature, which went caution free for the second night in a row. Cory
Struckhoff, Terry Cunningham and Josh Hudson chased Peters the whole distance
and stayed close but could not make a pass and finished second, third and
fourth. Jason Schoenberger rounded out the top five. Travis Towns and Peters won
the two heat races.
The Bomber feature was definitely the most exciting of the night as four
different drivers held the top spot in the 15-lap event. Hometown driver Bobby
Denning led the first lap before giving way to Tom Rosendahl on lap 2, but
Denning took the lead back on the next lap. Rosendahl’s night came to an end on
the following lap when he spun in turn 3 and was hit by Josh Latka. Two laps
later, Kyle Rohleder of Wakeeney, took control, with Tyler Kraus, Denning, and
Jeremy Blackwill giving chase. A caution on lap 13 set up a three lap dash to
the finish, and Tyler Kraus of Ransom finally got by Rohleder to take the
checkers and the bonus check after winning the previous night. But in post-tech,
another driver claimed Kraus, who refused the claim and was disqualified, moving
everybody up one spot in the finishing order and giving the win to Rohleder.
Blackwill, Denning, Ron Haremza and Paul Fabrizius would round out the top five.
Heat race victors were Blackwill and Kraus.
Norman Wiechman & Milo Lippelmann looked to claim their first Cruiser feature of
the year after leading the first 2 laps of the 15-lap event, but were passed on
lap 3 by Brett & Travis Glassman . The Oakley duo then fended off a late charge
by Joe & Jim Carter to claim the checkers. Wiechman & Lippelmann finished third.
Winning the two heat races were Josh Wonderly & Jason Davis, and John Rhudolph &
Amanda Maupin.
The regular four divisions return to action at the 3/8-mile oval Sunday evening,
June 11, and will also see a return of the O’Reilley/NCRA 360 Sprint Cars. Race
time is 6:00 p.m.
