Repeat winners at Wakeeney, Johnson tops sprints
By Mike Hughes
WAKEENEY, KS (June 11, 2006) - Wakeeney (KS) Speedway fans saw some familiar
faces in the winner’s circle as the four regular divisions had repeat winners.
Also on hand were the NCRA 360 Sprint Cars where Jason Johnson claimed the win
in the main event.
Johnson, of Ennis, LA, started on the pole of the 25-lap sprint car feature but
it was point leader Garry Lee Maier of Cimarron jumping to the lead at the drop
of the green. Johnson chased Lee Maier and made the winning pass on lap 8. A
couple of cautions just past the halfway mark kept the field close, but Johnson
was able to pull away for the win. Gaven Punch finished a close second, followed
by Gary Wright, Billy Alley and Lee Maier. C. J. Johnson and Luke Cranston
tangled in turn 3 on the final lap, resulting in C.J. flipping his #10x. Both
drivers escaped unharmed.
Michael Woodruff won the B-feature, with Jason Johnson, Keith Rauch and Lee
Maier winning the 3 heat races.
Russell’s Jeremy Zorn won his second IMCA Modified feature in a row at the
3/8-mile oval. Zorn passed early leader Kevin Hoeme and drove away from the
field. Randy Wilson worked his way to second place, followed by Hoeme, Marty
Clark and Jeff Tubbs. Heat race winners were John Fabrizius, John Fose, Zorn,
and Jeff Tubbs. Craig Colgin won the B-feature.
Josh Hudson of Kensington won his second feature of the season in the IMCA Stock
Car division. Hometown driver Travis Sherfick led the first 4 laps of the 20-lap
race before Hudson was able to make the pass. The lone caution flag waved on lap
19, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Hudson was able to hold off Dan
Lauer, heat one winner Caleb Peters, Travis Towns and Cory Struckhoff for the
victory. Jason Schoenberger won the other heat race.
Hometown driver Kyle Rohleder won his second Bomber feature in a row. Brent Moss
took the lead on the opening lap of the 15-lap feature. On lap 10, Moss was in a
four car race with Tom Rosendahl, Rohleder, and Jeremy Blackwill. On lap 12,
Rohleder made the pass and appeared to be headed to the winner’s circle, but
Adam Bryant spun on lap 14, setting up another green-white-checkered finish.
Rohleder was able to hang on the final two laps for the trip to victory lane.
Blackwill finished second, with Moss, Rosendahl and Ron Haremza rounding out the
top five. Blackwill and Rohleder claimed heat race wins.
The Oakley duo of Brett & Travis Glassman led all 10 laps of the Cruiser feature
for their second win in a row. Norman Wiechman & Milo Lippelmann ran second,
followed by Kenny Cain & Jerry Bates. The Glassmans also won the heat race.
The regular four divisions return to action at the 3/8-mile oval Sunday evening,
June 25. Race time is 6:00 p.m.
