Schaben is two for two for the weekend
By Mike Hughes
WAKEENEY, KS (July 16, 2006) - Selden’s Nate Schaben won his second IMCA
Modified feature in as many nights with a victory at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway
Sunday evening, July 16.
Schaben, who won the night before at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, started
outside of Casey Jo Wanger on the front row of the 23-car field. Schaben bolted
out to the lead at the drop of the green and led all 20 laps to the checkers.
The final of three caution flags came with two laps to go, setting up a
green-white-checkered finish. Jason Schoenberger tried his best to get by
Schaben, but he was up to the challenge and held off the Gorham driver for the
win. Kevin Hoeme finished third, followed by John Fabrizius and Jeremy Zorn.
Heat race winners were John Fose, Fabrizius and Schaben.
Stockton’s Tyler Hahn got past early leader Travis Sherfick after a lap 5
restart in the IMCA Stock Car feature to score his first win of the season at
the 3/8-mile oval. Hahn finished several car-lengths ahead of runner-up Jason
Schoenberger. Sherfick held on for third, followed by Terry Cunningham and heat
two winner Cory Struckhoff. Josh Hudson won the other heat race.
Jeremy Blackwill of Gem took advantage of a mistake by Clinton Hockersmith to
claim victory in the Bomber feature, his third of the year. Hockersmith led the
first 9 laps of the 15-lap race, but drifted high in turn four, allowing
Blackwill to get by underneath and take the lead. Hockersmith chased Blackwill
the remaining distance but had to settle for second. Kyle Rohleder, heat race
winner Tom Rosendahl, and Adam Balthazor rounded out the top five.
Cruiser point leaders Brett & Travis Glassman of Oakley took the lead at the
halfway mark of their main event from Norman Wiechman & Milo Lippelmann and
drove into victory lane. Kenny Cain & Jerry Bates finished second, followed by
John Rhudolph & Amanda Maupin and heat race winners Joe & Jim Carter.
The regular four divisions return to action at the 3/8-mile oval Sunday evening,
August 6. Race time is 6:00 p.m.
