USG Night Provides Action Packed Feature For Factory Stocks!!!
Points Battles Begin To HEAT UP!
by Larry Lowrey
KANSAS CITY, KS. (July 28, 2006) - When extra money is on the line, it can bring
out the best in some drivers. For some drivers it can bring out the worst of
times. Tim Shields is a driver that worked the 'bonus night' to his advantage,
while picking up another Factory Stock feature win.
Starting from the 7th row inside doesn't put you down as one of the favorites
going into the night. Tim Shields knew that his work was going to be cut out for
him. A sub par performance the week before would keep him out of the top 12. It
didn't worry him. He has come from the back of a feature to win before.
Multiple feature winner, Lynn Nelson looked like the driver to beat early. Hell
early, he led for most of the race. To be exact, he led for most of the race and
the last lap until the exit of turn 4.
"We got up to the high side and made it work," said Tim Shields, "... some
people weren't able to work up there and we did."
"The caution really seemed to help us, without that we wouldn't have won,"
replied Shields, " Hats off to (Lynn) Nelson, he ran a good race."
As Shields ran Nelson down for the last lap, it was a solid bite out of turn
number 4 that put him ahead of Nelson by a bumper at the flagstand.
Rounding out the top 5 were, Brian Mills in 3rd, 4th went to Terry Schmidt and
Dave Holcomb rebounded to take 5th.
John Allen has been in contention for a win the last couple of weeks. Friday
night he finally got the combination right as he would win the Modified Feature.
"That was a good race," said John Allen, "I did a lot of movin around early. I
didn't want my tires sealin' up, he (Tim Powell) was good."
Allen spent most of the night working his way through traffic before getting to
the top 3 cars and setting himself in for a battle with Tim Powell and Kerry
Davis.
Powell jumped out to the early lead, while Davis and Allen swapped spots back
and forth.
As Allen closed in on Powell, he was able to use lapped traffic to his advantage
and gained the lead. Powell, unfortunately, would get tangled up with the lap
car and bring out a yellow.
On the restart Allen drove to the lead. Davis put on a strong challenge, but
would be thwarted everytime by the leader, Allen.
Allen would go onto victory, while Davis would finish 2nd. Tim Karrick would
finish in the 3rd position. Also finding their way into the top 5 was Tom
Charles 4th and Jeff Herbers 5th. Herbers' run was impressive considering he
started 23rd on the field.
Unlike the weeks before, a new feature winner wasn't lurking around the corner
in the Grand National division. Unfortunately for most Grand National
competitors, Friday night's winner is regaining his old form.
Gene Claxton has won numerous features in his career. Don't tell him he is ready
for retirement, don't tell him it's time to get into the rocking chair and don't
tell him it's just time to hang it up! Claxton appears to have his driving
skills still in tact. Friday night, he solidified his strangle hold on the Grand
National points race.
Marshall Jewett, coming off a win at Linn County, started off with the early
lead. Defending his territory, Jewett held off runs from several drivers. Until
Claxton got to him.
On lap 13, Claxton made a run to pass Jewett. He was successful and he expanded
the lead with each lap.
Scotty Martin mounted a late charge on the leader, but it was too late as the
laps would wind down on him while in 2nd place.
Jewett settled for 3rd, Tim Billings, last week's winner, was 4th and Jimmy
Winkler capped off a good run with a top 5 finish.
Racing action gets underway next Friday night at Lakeside Speedway. Gates open
at 4:00 p.m. and races get started promptly at 7:30 p.m.
