Fabrizius, Balthazor, Blackwill repeat at Hays
By Mike Hughes
HAYS, KS (Aug. 20, 2006) - Excellent track conditions made for some exciting
feature racing Sunday evening, August 20, at Rolling Plains Motor Speedway in
Hays.
Colby’s John Fabrizius won his second IMCA Modified feature of the season. Ryan
Goheen led the first 2 laps before Fabrizius took the lead. R. Alan Dix then
chased Fabrizius and passed him for the lead on lap 16, only to have Fabrizius
retake the lead on lap 19. As the entire field took the white flag, Jeremy Zorn
spun in turn 1 to bring out a caution. After the field was realigned, track
officials deemed the finish official as all the cars had taken the white flag,
therefore the checkers waved while under caution. Dix finished second, followed
by Kevin Hoeme, Goheen, and Corey Lagroon. Heat race winners were Ronnie Hill,
Fabrizius and Dix.
Jason Rogers of Selden took the lead at the halfway mark of the 15-lap IMCA
Stock Car feature from Travis Sherfick, and held off a determined Josh Hudson
and Sherfick to score the victory. Cory Struckhoff and Jason Schoenberger
finished fourth and fifth. Rogers and Tyler Hahn won the two heat races.
Stockton’s Adam Balthazor won his second IMCA Hobby Stock feature in a row at
the 3/8-mile oval. Balthazor passed leader Mark Normandin on lap 2 and led the
remaining 10 laps in the caution-free race. Jerry Hudson finished second, with
B.J. Dauer, heat one winner Brian Conness, and Dustin McClurg rounding out the
top five. Balthazor won the other heat race.
Point leader Jeremy Blackwill of Gem continued his domination in the Bomber
class as he scored his fourth victory of the season in five outings for the
division. After a caution flag on lap 12, it was a one-lap shootout to the
checkers with Blackwill holding off Kyle Rohleder to the finish line. Bobby
Denning, Josh Latka and Todd Lutters completed the top five. Heat race victors
were Blackwill and Rohleder.
The Econos returned to the track and Matt Kraus of Ransom took the lead at the
halfway mark of the 10-lap feature from heat race winner Reed Bernbeck and drove
on to the checkers. Bernbeck finished second, followed by Josh Crombie.
Racing returns to Rolling Plains Motor Speedway Saturday night, September 2. The
NCRA 360 Sprint Car Series will invade the 3/8-mile oval, and will be joined by
the IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. Race time is 7:00
p.m.
