Exciting features at Elmwood Park
By Mike Hughes
NORTON, KS (Sept. 16, 2006)—Race fans at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, KS,
were treated to some exciting feature action in all four divisions Saturday
night, September 16.
The IMCA Modified feature saw ‘The Wichita Lineman’ Randy Wilson, Selden’s Nate
Schaben and Mitch Kline of Norton hook up in an exciting 20-lap main event. All
three drivers led at one time during the first half of the race with Kline in
front at the halfway mark. The final caution flag came on lap 19 when Kline went
up in smoke, putting Wilson in front for the green-white-checkered finish.
Wilson was able to hang on for the win, followed by Jason Schoenberger, Tim
Watts and Marty Clark. Second running Schaben bobbled on the last lap and
finished fifth. Heat race winners were Kline and Schaben.
‘The Tazz Man’ Tyler Hahn of Stockton was able to hold off Jason Schoenberger in
the IMCA Stock Car feature to record his first win of the season at the ½-mile
oval. Schoenberger pulled even with Hahn on several occasions but was never able
to make the pass and had to settle for the runner-up spot. Nathan Glendening
finished third, followed by J.R. McCreery and Josh Hudson. Hahn and Jason
McCartney were victorious in the two heat races.
Athol’s Jerry Hudson and Brady Schoen of Downs swapped the lead several times in
the IMCA Hobby Stock feature, but when the checkers fell at the end of the
12-lap race, Hudson was first, trailed by Brady Schoen, Dustin McClurg, Kelly
Karnopp and Brent Schoen. Brady Schoen and Karnopp were heat race victors.
Joe & Jim Carter of Russell took the lead on lap 3 from heat race winners Mike
Hockemeier & Jim Ellis in the 10-lap Cruiser feature and hobbled to the finish
line for their fifth win of the season at Norton. The Carters tagged the
guardrail on the final lap and cut down a right side tire but were able to limp
across the finish line first. Wes & Chuck Eagleburger finished second, followed
by Hockemeier & Ellis.
Coca-Cola (Mid-America Bottlers of Victoria) was the evening’s race sponsor.
The final race of the season at Elmwood Park Speedway is Saturday evening, Sept.
23, starting at 6:30. A regular race program will be followed by mechanics and
powder puff races in all divisions. It is also ‘Fan Appreciation Night’ with
adult grandstand admission only $5.00.
