Schaben repeats at Norton
By Mike Hughes
NORTON, KS (May 19)—Selden’s Nate Schaben won his second IMCA Modified feature
in a row at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, KS, Saturday evening, May 19.
Doug Shearer of Hays led the first 3 laps of the 20-lap race before heat one
winner Brian Calhoon made his way to the front. The first of two caution flags
waved on lap 8 when Gary Kline spun. Calhoon led the field back to green,
followed by Jason Schoenberger, second heat race winner Schaben, Shearer, and
Brandon Blochlinger. After several attempts, Schaben finally got by Calhoon to
take the lead on lap 12. The final caution waved on lap 17 when Blochlinger lost
power and came to a stop. After the restart, Schoenberger pulled alongside
Schaben several times but could not make the pass and had to settle for second.
Calhoon finished third, followed by Mitch Kline and Marty Clark.
Robert Rutherford led the opening lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature before
yielding to Jason Davis on the following lap. However, Kensington’s Cory
Struckhoff, who started eighth, made his way to the top spot on lap 6 and never
looked back. Struckhoff drove away for the win in the caution free 20-lap race,
with Josh Hudson second. Heat race winners John Huffman and Davis finished third
and fourth, with Nathan Glendening rounding out the top five.
Plainville’s Gene Sneath led all 12 laps of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Jerry
Hudson and heat race winner Kelly Karnopp chased Sneath all the way but had to
settle for second and third. Dustin McClurg and Frank McClurg finished fourth
and fifth.
The 4-cylinder Young Guns had quite an evening. Dalton Dolan won the heat race,
which saw Loyd Schoen roll his truck. He was not injured. Then in the 8-lap
feature, Dolan rolled his truck on lap 5 in turn four. He was not hurt but done
for the race. Then as the field was going through turns three and four coming to
the checkers, Elliott Conard made contact with leader Levi Kiser of Logan, which
sent Kiser barrel-rolling in the corner. Kiser was not injured. Race officials
called the race reverting back to the previous lap, giving Kiser the win. Dusty
Eagleburger finished second, followed by Conard.
The Mod Lites made a special appearance, and veteran Bud Lee of Salina led all
10 laps on the ˝-mile oval to win the main event. Heat race winner Brandon Gray
placed second, and Travis Smith third.
Racing action returns to the ˝-mile oval on Saturday evening, May 26, with the
