305 Sprint Cars invade Wakeeney
By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (July 15) - The United Rebel Sprint Series 305 sprint cars invaded Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, July 15, with 28 cars checking in for competition.

Kirby Hagans took the lead from early leader Randy Bantam to try to make it two nights in a row after winning the night before at Dodge City. Hagans led through lap 8 of the 25-lap sprint car main event before ‘The Kansas Tornado’ Jon Johnson took over the top spot. But Hagans regained the lead at the halfway mark and drove away for the win. Heat three winner Johnson finished second, followed by heat two victor Justin Schwein, Raymond Seeman and Cody Salem. Keefe Hemel won the opening heat race, while Larry Radcliffe claimed the checkers in the 12-lap B-main.

Four different drivers led the 20-lap IMCA Modified main event. Second heat winner John Fose led the first 3 laps before Barry Maupin took over the top spot. However Maupin was passed on lap 8 by point leader Corey Lagroon who took command. But as the field came to the white flag, Dustin Daniels, who hounded Lagroon the entire second half of the race, finally made the pass stick and held off Lagroon at the wire for the win, his second of the season. Mark Zorn finished third, trailed by Maupin and third heat winner Matt Fabrizius. Ronnie Hill also won a heat race.

It was almost a photo finish in the IMCA Stock Car feature as Stockton’s Tyler Hahn and Cory Struckhoff of Kensington were involved, and both drivers waited to see which one would be sent to victory lane as neither driver knew who had won. Track officials gave the nod to Hahn, who is the first driver in the stock car division to repeat this year at the 3/8-mile oval. Early leader Terry Cunningham finished third, followed by Jay Hachmeister and Travis Towns. Heat race winners were Josh Hudson and Jason Davis.

The IMCA Hobby Stock feature saw Marquette’s B.J. Dauer lead from green to checkered in their 15-lap main event. Dauer had a big lead built up until a couple of caution flags the last 5 laps bunched up the field. Jerry Hudson made a late charge but had to settle for second, followed by Brian Hilbert, Brian Conness and Kelly Karnopp. It was Dauer’s third win of the season at Wakeeney. Heat race winners were Leon Pfannenstiel and Joe Couse. Gene Sneath rolled his car in heat two but was not injured. Repairs were made to his car and he was able to race in the main event.

Norman Weichman of Scott City and Milo Lippelmann of Oberlin teamed up to win their second Cruno feature of the year, leading all 15 laps in the feature race. Heat one winners Jim Carter & Josh Hudson finished second, followed by Justin Colby. Alfred Emmons won the other heat race.

Racing action returns to Wakeeney Speedway on Sunday, August 5, with the regular four divisions in competition. Race time is 6:00 p.m.
