305 Sprints return to RPM Speedway
By Mike Hughes
HAYS, KS (August 11)—The United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars returned to
RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, Saturday evening, August 11, and joined the regular
four divisions in action.
Eighth starting Justin Schwein of Russell shot to the top side of the track at
the drop of the green to take a lead on the opening lap he would not relinquish
in the 25-lap URSS main event. Veteran Jon Johnson chased Schwein the entire
distance but could not get quite close enough to attempt a pass and had to
settle for second. Doug Roth was third, followed by point leader Smokey Fairbank,
and Ken Lutters. Heat race winners were Fairbank, Schwein and Lutters.
‘The Z Man’ Mark Zorn of Russell led all 20 laps of the IMCA Modified feature.
Zorn took advantage of his pole starting position and gradually pulled away from
the field. Barry Maupin finished second, while John Fose won the battle for
third over Jerry Teel and Ronnie Hill. Matt Fabrizius, Zorn, and John Fabrizius
won the three heat races.
Tyler Hahn took the lead on lap 3 from Jordan Blackwill in the IMCA Stock Car
main event and appeared to be on his way to a victory. But Hahn broke with just
a couple of laps to go in the 15-lap race, giving the lead to heat two winner
Cory Struckhoff of Kensington, who chased Hahn most of the race. Struckhoff
claimed the win, followed by heat one winner Terry Cunningham, Jason Rogers,
Travis Sherfick and Marty Barth.
Stockton’s Adam Balthazor led all 15 laps of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature for
his second win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Heat three winner Gene Sneath
was glued to Balthazor’s back bumper the last half of the race but had to settle
for the runner-up spot. Dustin McClurg, Josh Latka and Jerry Hudson rounded out
the top five. Justin Hopp and Balthazor also won heat races.
Dave Junemann of Hays won his third IMCA Sport Compact feature in four outings
for the division. Art Herzog was second, followed by Nicole Woods. Jesse Dunlap
won the heat race.
Oldham Sales Inc. of Hays was the evening’s race sponsor, and Bobby Cox the
Clown was also on hand to entertain.
RPM Speedway will host the All Star Circuit of Champions on a special show
Tuesday, August 14, at 8:00 p.m. The IMCA Hobby Stocks will also be in action.
The next regular program will be Friday, August 24, at 8:00 p.m. with the
regular four divisions in competition. It will also be Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Night with some special activities planned.
