Track champions crowned at Elmwood Park Speedway

NORTON, KS (August 25) - The 2007 racing season came to a close at Elmwood Park
Speedway in Norton, KS, Saturday evening, August 25. Points champions were
crowned in all 5 divisions.
Beloit’s Brian Calhoon took the lead from Barry Maupin on lap 3 of the 16-lap
IMCA Modified feature and led the rest of the way to the checkers. Heat one
winner Tim Watts finished in the runner-up spot, trailed by Gary Kline, Jason
Schoenberger, and Maupin. Calhoon also won a heat race. John Fabrizius of Colby
took points honors.
In the IMCA Stock Car feature, Wakeeney’s Travis Sherfick picked up his first
win of the season at the ½-mile oval. Heat two winner Josh Hudson chased
Sherfick and pulled alongside a few times late in the 18-lap race but could not
make the pass and settled for second. Jason Davis, Cory Struckhoff and Jay
Hachmeister rounded out the top five. Jason McCartney won the other heat race.
Struckhoff, of Kensington, took the track title.
Gene Sneath of Plainville led wire-to-wire in the 14-lap IMCA Hobby Stock
feature. Sneath pulled away for the win, but runner-up ‘Rapid’ Rhett Kingsbury
closed late but settled for second. Kelly Karnopp was third, followed by
Kensington’s Jerry Hudson and Frank McClurg. Hudson’s fourth place finish gave
him the track championship in a close points race over Karnopp. Sneath and
Kingsbury won the two heat races.
After winning the Cruiser heat race, Russell’s Joe & Jim Carter took the lead on
lap 4 of the feature race from Norman Weichman & Darin Honeyman and held on to
the checkers. Curtis Craig & Emily Schamp finished third. The Carters also won
the track championship.
Alex Loveless of Lincoln made the long haul worthwhile with a win in the
4-cylinder main event. Loveless led all 8 laps enroute to the win. Dusty
Eagleburger finished second, followed by heat race winner Royal Fisher. Loyd
Schoen of Lenora won the points title.
Following the regular race program, King of the Hill races were held in the 3
IMCA-sanctioned classes. Winners were Tim Watts, IMCA Modified; Jason Davis,
IMCA Stock Cars; and Kelly Karnopp in IMCA Hobby Stocks. Mechanics races and
Powder Puff races were also held.
The management of Elmwood Park Speedway would like to thank everyone for their
