Sherfick, Karnopp claim second wins at Norton
By Mike Hughes

NORTON, KS (April 19) - Wakeeney’s Travis ‘The Terminator’ Sherfick and hometown driver Kelly Karnopp both picked up their second win of the season at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, KS, Saturday evening, April 19.

It was the second race of the Thunder Series for the IMCA Stock Cars and 15 cars took the green flag for the 20-lap feature event. Jason McCartney led the first 2 laps before Brian Lariviere took over the top spot. At the halfway mark, Lariviere had built up a sizeable lead, but there was a fierce race for second with McCartney, Adam Balthazor, Cory Struckhoff, and Sherfick. The lone caution of the race came on lap 19 when Arnold Williams spun, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Lariviere led the field back to green, but on the final lap, Sherfick got under Lariviere to beat him to the checkers for his second Norton win of the season, and his second win in the Thunder Series. Lariviere held on for second, followed by Struckhoff, McCartney, and Balthazor. Heat race winners were Robert Rutherford and Lariviere.

The IMCA Modified feature had a wild start and finish. A melee in turn one on the opening lap collected four cars, ending the night for Mark Zorn, Barry Maupin and Danny Keller. On the restart, ‘The Super Trooper’ Doug Shearer took the lead at the drop of the green with Kensington’s Josh Hudson giving chase. Shearer led through lap 8 until his motor let go, giving Hudson the lead. Hudson pulled out to a huge lead, while Marty Clark, Matt Fabrizius, Mike Petersilie and Gary Kline battled for the runner-up spot. The caution flew on lap 19 for a two car spin, giving the field a shot at ‘The Hammer’ with another green-white-checkered finish. But Hudson held on to score his first IMCA Modified feature win of his career, followed by Clay Bontrager, Mike Martin, Clark, and Rick Schwab. Petersilie and Shearer claimed wins in the two heat races, while Maupin took the cash dash, sponsored by Ron’s Gun Sales of Norton.

The IMCA Hobby Stock feature saw four different leaders in the first 5 laps. Troy Robinson led the opening lap, but was passed on lap 2 by Ricky Runnion. However Runnion came to a stop on lap 3, bringing out a caution, giving the lead back to Robinson. But Robinson was passed by Joey Carter on lap 4, who gave way to Norton’s Kelly Karnopp on lap 5. Karnopp led the remaining distance in the 14-lap race to earn his second win of the season at the ½-mile oval. Heat race winners Jeromy Wagner and Runnion finished second and third, followed by Jerry Hudson and Rhett Kingsbury.

Dalton Dolan led the first 7 laps of the 8-lap 4-cylinder Young Gun main event before heat race winner Craig Werth of Hays drove under Dolan on the final lap to score the win. Art Herzog finished third, followed by Loyd Schoen and Andrew Soderlund.

The next race at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton will take place Saturday evening, April 26, at 6:00 p.m. with the regular four divisions in competition. It will also be Boy Scout Night. All Boy Scouts in uniform will be admitted free with a paid adult.
