Wakeeney Speedway opens 2008 racing season By Mike Hughes WAKEENEY, KS (April 20)—Wakeeney (KS) Speedway kicked off the 2008 racing season Sunday evening, April 20, with the regular four divisions in action. The races were dedicated to Keith Garrett, a long time supporter and helper at the speedway. Defending track champion Corey Lagroon of Salina made it look easy as he jumped to the lead at the drop of the green of the IMCA Modified A-feature and never looked back, pulling away to win the 20-lap caution free race. Jerry Phillips finished second, followed by Jason Schoenberger, Nick Tubbs and Tim Leiker. Heat race winners in the 38-car field were Lagroon, Ronnie Hill, Phillips, Marty Clark and Leiker. Mike Lunow and Jeremy Zorn were victors in the B-features. The IMCA Stock Car feature also went caution free. Travis Sherfick took advantage of his pole starting position to jump to the front, trailed by Terry Cunningham, Adam Balthazor, Josh Hudson and Cory Struckhoff. Sherfick pulled out to a slight advantage, while the other four were in a heated race for second. Struckhoff, of Kensington, was able to get his car to hook up to the high side and worked his way to second, then passed Sherfick with 2 laps to go to claim the checkers. Sherfick held on for second, followed by Cunningham, Hudson, and Ryan Wark. Cunningham and Sherfick were victorious in the two heat races. B.J. Dauer of Marquette led all 15 laps to top the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Ricky Runnion placed second, followed by Josh Latka, Eric Wahrman and Kirk Karst. Dauer and Travis Glassman were winners in the two heat races. Norman Wiechman led the first half of the 12-lap Cruno feature before the team of Alfred Emmons of Russell and Kenny Cain of Lucas took command and led the remaining distance. Wiechman was second, followed by heat race winner Dalton Bauer. Racing returns to Wakeeney Speedway on Sunday evening, May 4, at 6:00
p.m. with the regular four classes back in action. IMCA Stock Cars IMCA Modifieds Crunos |
