Track Schedules

KANSAS CITY, KS (June 27)- The weather loomed big once again at Lakeside Speedway. Lakeside staff did a masterful job of working together to beat the weather and they just did. A few racers were glad that they were able to complete the entire show.

Mark Schafman is one of those drivers. For a few years now, Schafman has competed in the Modified division at Lakeside. He has tasted success in the form of top 5 finishes, but never has he had the chance to taste victory. Schafman made sure that changed tonight as he picked up his 1st Modified Feature win.

Schafman is a little bit of a throwback. He doesn't have a big enclosed trailer, he doesn't have a big crew helping him and he doesn't have a 'big time' motor program. What he does have is a drive to get better each and every week out. In 2008, this has been tough for him.

At the beginning of this season, Schafman decided to go with a new modified chassis maker from Wichita, KS, Bills Built Modifieds. Having to work out the adjustments from his old car to the new one were tough, but not as tough as he thought. Since play day, he knew this car was fast, he just needed to change a few things in the setup to suit his style and the two have been a good fit ever since.

Tonight was a rushed night for all the drivers at Lakeside Speedway, but Schafman worked his magic on an, uncharacteristic track at Lakeside, dry-slick.
Starting on the front row, it would be Terry Bruner that jumped into the early lead. Schafman would chase him down and make the pass for the lead. From there on, it was a matter of driving a smart race for Schafman.

Momentum was the key in turns 3 and 4, while the bottom of the race track was the preferred line in turns 1 and 2. Current points leader, Chad Lyle, would make a run at Schafman. Each time the opposition showed up, he would gain the advantage back and hold on. Working his way to the end of the race was a tough one, considering he hadn't been in this situation before. It didn't matter, even with a couple of late race yellows, Schafman would move on to his first win.
With the win, Schafman becomes the 7th different Modified Feature winner on the season.

Chad Lyle, maintained his points lead on the night by finishing 2nd, Finishing in the 3rd position with another strong run was Bubba Harvey (who kept his string of top 5's going), 4th went to Kerry Davis and rounding out the top 5 was a feature winner from earlier in the season, Gene Claxton.

When you are at the crap table and you try and roll your point, there are several ways or combinations to get what you need. On Friday night, Nic Bidinger rolled lucky number 7, the hard way.

The night started out bad for Bidinger. In the staging area, his car wouldn't fire. He was forced to miss the heat race. Not a good break, since this would put him at the rear of the field for the main event.

On the green flag lap to start the race, three cars got tangled up coming out of turn 4. Move Bidinger up a few spots on the restart.

As a pass was being made for the lead by Darren Kling, he would lose it in the next corner, which brought out another yellow. Each time a yellow came out on the track it gave Bidinger a chance to get closer to the leaders and gain more ground.

Tim Shields, the former Factory Stock champion, took his shot at the lead. For several laps it looked as if he might have what it took to get the job done. As the laps clicked off, Shields was holding his own. Unfortunately for him, so was Bidinger. Just pass the halfway mark, Bidinger made his jump to the inside of Shields. Coming off of turn two, the inside groove proved to be enough for Bidinger to take the lead and once out front he was gone.

David Powell put on a good race as he went on to finish 2nd on the evening, 3rd was Tim Shields, newcomer, Tom Grist, finished in the 4th spot and coming in the 5th position was Don Marrs.

If you ever got feature wins for being popular, then Darrin Christy would have a ton of feature wins! Christy is probably one of the nicest racers you will ever meet. He loves racing in general and he does whatever he can for whoever he can. A great characteristic.

A couple of weeks ago, Christy was so close to a win, but while leading his engine let go and it took him off the track. Tonight he had to earn everything he got. It didn't seem like the 'Racing Gods' wanted him at the front of the field.

Two times prior to Christy taking the lead, he would get past the early leader, Sean Foster, only to see his passes wiped out by yellow flags thrown on the speedway.

On the third try he made his move and it held. Christy went into the lead and he extended the lead when he got there. It was his first win of the season.

A great race was going on behind Christy as Sean Foster, Bobby Ohrenberg, Buz Kaster, Marshall Jewett, Tyler Schmidt and Mike Taylor were all waging war. At times the racers were 3 to 4 wide on the track. Clean and exciting racing for the fans watching as the drivers swapped paint and spots all the way to the finish line.

The current points leader, Buz Kaster, finished in the runner-up spot, 3rd went to Foster, Ohrenberg had one of his best finishes of the season, 4th and completing the top 5 was Marshall Jewett.

Next week at Lakeside Speedway is the '4th of July Sprint Car Spectacular' with Grand Nationals and Factory Stocks. Tickets are on sale now at the Lakeside ticket office. Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 7:00 p.m. and racing goes green at 7:30.
