KANSAS CITY, KS (August 1) -  Any race track you go to in America, you will find someone smiling at the end of the night. Mark Schafman couldn't contain his smile or excitement after winning his 2nd Modified A Main in 2008.

"This is so exciting!," said Schafman after the win. "We got out front and the Bill's Built car stayed up there all night. I can't believe this car is working so good... I am in heaven, it's a dream come true."

You can't help but enjoy Schafman's new found enthusiasm. For the 2nd time in the '08 season he picked up a win in a tough Modified class. Thirty-eight modifieds checked in and on any given night you can find some of the fastest Modifieds in the Midwest right here at Lakeside Speedway.

As Schafman pointed out earlier, he got out to a quick start in the feature. The original start was marred by a large wreck that collected a majority of the racers.

Once they got back to green flag action, Schafman, once again, settled in at the point. Chad Lyle, the current points leader, also gave chase. Lyle held down the 2nd spot for most of the race and put several moves to take over the lead, but was unable to get the job done. He would finish in the runner-up spot.

For the 2nd straight race Joe Walker found himself in the 3rd position when the checkered flag dropped. Walker would make a strong battle for the 2nd spot with Lyle, but would find the short end of that stick. Fourth place went to a hard charging John O'Neal Jr. and finishing up in the 5th spot was Jake Richards.

Heat race winners in the Modifieds were Kerry Davis, John Washburn, Scott Crystal and Chad Lyle.

The Grand National division saw another new winner of the '08 season on Friday night, Tim Shields.

Shields is no stranger to Victory Lane at Lakeside Speedway. He ranks as one of the most winning est drivers in the Factory Stock class since returning to dirt in 2000. Shields also is coming off a track championship in the Factory Stock division in '07.

It was easy getting to the front. Shields had to run down Don Marrs. Marrs was having one of his best nights at Lakeside Speedway. He jumped to the lead and was looking strong lap after lap. Sheilds was just getting warmed up.

As he got to Marrs, it only took a couple of laps to go by him and set sail at the front of the feature. Shields would go for broke as he put the car in harder each and every lap into the corners. A few times he even appeared to jump the cushion or get out of shape, before grabbing it back together and heading back out to a big lead and eventually, the win.

Marrs held on for 2nd, 2x feature winner, Paul Lanferman, finished 3rd, Ben Kyle came in at the 4th spot and rounding out the top 5 was David Powell.

Grand National heat race wins went to Mike Taylor Jr and Jim Conley.

As the Factory Stock feature got underway, all the fans had been looking at the tight points race that had been shaping up over the previous race nights. Five drivers came into the night with a total of 39 points separating them. Not only were there points at stake, but these are some drivers that have Factory Stock history behind them.

Buz Kaster, Mike Taylor, Terry Schmidt, Darrin Christy and Jason Ryun are at the top of the leader board for now. Between the 5 drivers they have a total of 27 wins between them. Each one of these drivers is capable of winning it all, it just depends on who can capitalize and get the breaks when it counts.

Darrin Christy made the first move with 4 points nights left in the '08 season. Christy took off to the front of the field and cruised to an easy win.

"We started off the season running week to week," said Christy, "we said we weren't running for points and it's worked pretty good for us. I got my first win a couple of weeks ago, and who would have thought I would have 2 (wins). So I am happy."

Christy would win his 2nd feature of the year in impressive fashion, only the current points leader, Buz Kaster, would mount a charge at Christy, but he wouldn't be able to get the job done.

With a solid heat race finish and a runner-up finish, Kaster would leave the track with the points lead still intact.

During the race the fans were treated as the top 5 drivers in the points standings would race hard in the top 6 spots. As the race went on, the positions would fall into place.

Jason Ryun tried to wrestle the runner-up spot away and would settle for 3rd, Kelby Ostrander put together one of his best runs for a 4th place finish and last week's feature winner, Mike Taylor, rounded out the top 5.

Tyler Schmidt, Darrin Christy, Brett Heeter and Buz Kaster were your Factory Stock heat race winners.

Action gets back underway at Lakeside Speedway next Friday night. Only 5 points races are left and don't for a second think the action won't be hot and heavy. Gates open at 5, hot laps are at 7 and the first race goes green at 7:30. Adult tickets are $10 and kids 8 - 14 are just $6.
