Kensington drivers dominate at Norton By Mike Hughes NORTON, KS (August 16) - Three Kensington drivers made their way to victory lane at Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, KS, Saturday evening, August 16, while Loyd Schoen and Brian Conness made their first appearance in the winner’s circle. The IMCA Modified feature had a tough time getting started, but once they did, Barry Maupin took the early lead, but was passed on lap 5 by ‘The Hammer’ Josh Hudson of Kensington. Hudson held off the field to the checkers to put the #11RC HRC car in victory lane for the 4th time this season at Elmwood Park, and making it a clean sweep after victories in the second heat and the cash dash. Jerry Phillips finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Maupin, Mark ‘The Z Man’ Zorn, and Doug ‘Super Trooper’ Shearer. Gary Kline won the other heat race. The IMCA Stock Car feature was exciting from start to finish in the caution-free 20-lap race. Dustin McClurg led the first 4 laps before Kensington’s Cory Struckhoff made the pass, as did Travis ‘The Terminator’ Sherfick. Struckhoff and Sherfick ran nose-to-tail the rest of the distance on the ½-mile oval, with Sherfick passing Struckhoff on lap 11 before Struckhoff regained the lead the following lap. Heat two winner Colton Osborn made it a 3-car battle late in the race, but Struckhoff held on at the wire for his third win this season at Norton. Rounding out the top five were Sherfick, Osborne, heat one winner Jay Hachmeister, and Casey Werkmeister. The IMCA Hobby Stock feature saw Josh Rohrbough lead the first 4 laps of the 15-lap event before heat one victor Jeromy Wagner of Kensington took control. Wagner led the field back to green after the lone caution on lap 11 and led the remaining distance for the victory. Austin Davis was second, followed by heat two winner Rhett ‘The Rocket’ Kingsbury, Troy Robinson, and Mathew Crowell. The ‘young gun’ Loyd Schoen of Lenora won the 4-cylinder Young Gun main event. Schoen led from green to checkered in the 8-lap race. Heat race winner Michael Smith and Jesse Dunlap finished second and third. Wakeeney’s Brian Conness led all 8 laps of the Sport Mod feature. The lone caution waved on lap 5, but Coness pulled away on the restart. Jason Davis was second and Adam Bryant third. Conness also won the heat race.
