Everyone Geared Up For The Tom Karrick Modified Memorial KANSAS CITY, KS (August 27) - Wow can racing at Lakeside Speedway get more exciting? If it can, it will surely happen this Friday night. The Tom Karrick Modified Memorial will take center stage at Lakeside. This race has an added purse, which is due to the hard work of the Karrick family, it always draws new racers and it has provided with some great moments over the years. Tom Karrick was an area racer that spent decades racing. A popular racer with drivers and fans, his family continues his memory each and every year at Lakeside Speedway. It seems to be a fitting way to remember a man that spent a lot of years competing in the sport he loved, alongside his family. A long list of who's who in modified racing can lay claim to winning this prestigious race. Some drivers can even claim more than one win. No matter how you stack it, this Friday night will be a great night to see great racing at Lakeside Speedway. Only one more week until our 2008 Champions are crowned with the Coors
Light Cup on Sept. 5! Looking into the crystal ball for this Friday night, there are a lot of fuzzy images. Parody might come into play, like it has in previous years. Current points leader, Chad Lyle, is coming off the win last week and he would like nothing better than to keep that momentum going with a win again this week. A win this week would push him further ahead in the points standings and it would continue the solid '08 season he is having. Tim Karrick is chasing Lyle in the points. He has the most wins of anyone in the modified division this year. He is coming off a top 5 finish last week. Karrick would love nothing more than to honor his father with his 4th Tom Karrick win. He just might be able to get the job done, if he does it will be win number 6 on the year for Karrick. Tom Charles & Mark Schafman could also be big factors in this week's race. Each of these drivers has a win this year and it seems that after each feature they are in the top 5. One might think that they could be do for a win. A driver that seems to be on the opposite side of good luck right now is Kerry Davis. Davis has had something go wrong almost the whole month of August. Last week while leading he had to pull off because of motor problems. Fans might be wondering when his luck is going to turn around. Several things can happen on Friday night. One thing that we haven't talked about is the chance of an outsider coming to Lakeside and pulling off the win. Mike Ryun did it in 2005. It could happen again. With the Jayhawk on the way, followed by the Modified Shootout, there could be some drivers wanting to test the waters at Lakeside before those events get here. As we stated earlier, a lot of different things could happen. Make sure you aren't someone that saying "I shouldn't have missed the 2008 Tom Karrick Modified Memorial, I head that it was an AWESOME race!" Driver To Watch This Week: John Allen, #98 (Hughes Chassis) Allen has yet to record a win at Lakeside this season. Yes, he hasn't competed there every race this season, but he wasn't expecting to be winless at this point in time. Last week might have been his week. He started 23rd on the field and by lap #8 he was all the way up to 5th. It seemed like everything was falling in place for Allen after a sub par heat race and B main. His night would end by lap 10 as something in the motor became a problem and he would pull off the speedway. For whatever reason, Allen hit upon something in his setup for the feature. If he can duplicate it this weekend, I don't think you can keep him out of the Coors Light Victory Lane. Watch for the former champion to be up front Friday night. Unbelievable was the wreck that occurred in turn 3 last week, under yellow no less! Darren Kling and Brad Dibben got together on the back stretch. While the contact happened, Dibben was spun toward the outside retaining wall. He would make contact and flip off the track. Kling would lose most of his body and come to a stop in the bottom of turn 3, but not before being run over by Jimmy Winkler in the #16. It was a bad incident to say the least and it's a good thing that everyone turned out ok. The bad thing is, will everyone be able to make it back out this week? Dibben's car sustained the most damage. He will be questionable to be out, but if anyone can get a car ready to go, they can. It has been an up and down season for the Grand Nationals in 2008.
Hopefully everyone will be able to continue on and finish out the season
strong. Driver To Watch This Week: Ben Kyle, #45 (Gardner, KS) |
