Everyone Geared Up For The Tom Karrick Modified Memorial

KANSAS CITY, KS (August 27)  - Wow can racing at Lakeside Speedway get more exciting? If it can, it will surely happen this Friday night. The Tom Karrick Modified Memorial will take center stage at Lakeside.

This race has an added purse, which is due to the hard work of the Karrick family, it always draws new racers and it has provided with some great moments over the years.

Tom Karrick was an area racer that spent decades racing. A popular racer with drivers and fans, his family continues his memory each and every year at Lakeside Speedway. It seems to be a fitting way to remember a man that spent a lot of years competing in the sport he loved, alongside his family.

A long list of who's who in modified racing can lay claim to winning this prestigious race. Some drivers can even claim more than one win.

No matter how you stack it, this Friday night will be a great night to see great racing at Lakeside Speedway.

Only one more week until our 2008 Champions are crowned with the Coors Light Cup on Sept. 5!

Modified Preview

Kansas City, KS - The Tom Karrick Modified Memorial race has a lot of memories over the years. None seem to be as big as the current year. Each and every year something happens that's bigger and better than the year before. This adds to the legend of this year.

Looking into the crystal ball for this Friday night, there are a lot of fuzzy images. Parody might come into play, like it has in previous years.

Current points leader, Chad Lyle, is coming off the win last week and he would like nothing better than to keep that momentum going with a win again this week. A win this week would push him further ahead in the points standings and it would continue the solid '08 season he is having.

Tim Karrick is chasing Lyle in the points. He has the most wins of anyone in the modified division this year. He is coming off a top 5 finish last week. Karrick would love nothing more than to honor his father with his 4th Tom Karrick win. He just might be able to get the job done, if he does it will be win number 6 on the year for Karrick.

Tom Charles & Mark Schafman could also be big factors in this week's race. Each of these drivers has a win this year and it seems that after each feature they are in the top 5. One might think that they could be do for a win.

A driver that seems to be on the opposite side of good luck right now is Kerry Davis. Davis has had something go wrong almost the whole month of August. Last week while leading he had to pull off because of motor problems. Fans might be wondering when his luck is going to turn around.

Several things can happen on Friday night. One thing that we haven't talked about is the chance of an outsider coming to Lakeside and pulling off the win. Mike Ryun did it in 2005. It could happen again. With the Jayhawk on the way, followed by the Modified Shootout, there could be some drivers wanting to test the waters at Lakeside before those events get here.

As we stated earlier, a lot of different things could happen. Make sure you aren't someone that saying "I shouldn't have missed the 2008 Tom Karrick Modified Memorial, I head that it was an AWESOME race!"

Driver To Watch This Week: John Allen, #98 (Hughes Chassis)
This certainly hasn't been the way that the 2007 Modified Track Champion wanted to see his 2008 season go.

Allen has yet to record a win at Lakeside this season. Yes, he hasn't competed there every race this season, but he wasn't expecting to be winless at this point in time.

Last week might have been his week. He started 23rd on the field and by lap #8 he was all the way up to 5th. It seemed like everything was falling in place for Allen after a sub par heat race and B main.

His night would end by lap 10 as something in the motor became a problem and he would pull off the speedway.

For whatever reason, Allen hit upon something in his setup for the feature. If he can duplicate it this weekend, I don't think you can keep him out of the Coors Light Victory Lane.

Watch for the former champion to be up front Friday night.

Grand National Preview

Kansas City, KS - Each week we talk about the Grand Nationals, we also talk about Nic Bidinger. This week shouldn't be any different. All the youngster from Perry, Ks. did was win his 10th feature of the season. Only Kerry Davis and Gene Claxton are in the double-digit win fraternity along with Bidinger.
Bidinger's intensity and drive for a championship in 2008 has been unbelievable.

Unbelievable was the wreck that occurred in turn 3 last week, under yellow no less!

Darren Kling and Brad Dibben got together on the back stretch. While the contact happened, Dibben was spun toward the outside retaining wall. He would make contact and flip off the track. Kling would lose most of his body and come to a stop in the bottom of turn 3, but not before being run over by Jimmy Winkler in the #16. It was a bad incident to say the least and it's a good thing that everyone turned out ok.

The bad thing is, will everyone be able to make it back out this week? Dibben's car sustained the most damage. He will be questionable to be out, but if anyone can get a car ready to go, they can.

It has been an up and down season for the Grand Nationals in 2008. Hopefully everyone will be able to continue on and finish out the season strong.
Watch him this week. I have a funny feeling he might better his finish from 2 weeks ago.

Driver To Watch This Week: Ben Kyle, #45 (Gardner, KS)
Last week Kyle finished up in the runner-up spot for the Grand National Feature. A strong run indeed for this racer from Gardner.
Kyle has been one of those drivers that seems to still be feeling out his car and the Lakeside race track. As he gets more comfortable, you see him starting to get better each and every week.
Last week's run, might be what he needs to keep him moving up farther in the final results.
Keep an eye on the 45!

Factory Stock Preview

Kansas City, KS - The points race closed up a little bit last week. Darrin Christy pulled to within 34 points of the leader, Buzz Kaster. It seemed just like a couple of weeks ago there was only a 2 point difference between 1st and 2nd.
It doesn't matter what happens to Christy this week. He is bowing out of the points race, because he will not be at Lakeside Speedway for the final race of the season. Every year Christy attends the Super Nationals in Boone, IA with family and this year will be no exception.
Mike Taylor could have closed the gap on Kaster too, but he fell out with a mechanical problem while battling for the lead.
Kaster dropped out of the race due to a problem, but with the way things happened behind him, he is still in the drivers seat heading into the final two weeks of points races.
The Factory Stock points race might have spaced itself out, the class has provided a year's worth of racing excitement and it can boast the most individual winners (9).
Driver To Watch This Week: Don Chaffin, #49 (Kansas City, MO)
Chaffin is a competitor that has been at it for awhile. I guess we can say he his one of the veterans of the class. Last week he celebrated one of his best runs in 2008.
This season he has been working closely with Mike Taylor (the current points leader) and Bobby Ohrenberg (last week's feature winner). Last week it looked as if the 3 might go 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the feature. Taylor would fall out, but he and Ohrenberg would finish 1st and 2nd.
The 2008 season hasn't been perfect for Chaffin, but he is still in the top 10 in points and he has a handful of top 5 finishes to his name. Coming off a strong run last week, just might be what this racer needs to find victory lane. We know his teammates can get there, the question is can he get there? I believe he can do it and I think this might be the week.
Watch the driver from KCMO in the #49.
