Lyle & Bidinger Cap Off Championship Season With Feature Wins & Ostrander Wins Factory Stock by: Larry Lowrey KANSAS CITY, KS (Sept 19) - Friday night contained some drama heading into the Coors Light Championship Night. Former track champions, Tim Karrick and Chad Lyle, were going to duke-it- out to see who would get their 3rd championship in the Modified division. Lyle came into the night with a slim 15 point edge. By the time it was over, Lyle never gave Karrick a chance to get the title. The biggest scare of the night for Lyle came on the opening lap of the
Modified Feature. John O'Neal Jr. got into the back of Allan Lawrence, which
set off a chain reaction of wrecked cars throughout the field. Luck happened
to be on the side of both Lyle and Karrick, as they would skate by unharmed.
Lyle was excited about his win and championship. "This is a pretty big deal," said Lyle, "... Bowyer's got two (championships), Karrick's got two and I came in with two, man I was wanting 3. I told people all week long that going into tonight if it was meant to be, it would come. We would settle it all on the track." With the win Lyle becomes the only modified driver to win 3 championships at Lakeside Speedway, since returning to dirt in 2000. At this time, Lyle has won just about every major event for Modifieds at Lakeside Speedway, but he still looks forward to the future and the possibility of momentum heading into some big upcoming events. "We are going to come back next week and run the Shootout, then the Jayhawk," said Lyle, "it's on now, we don't have anything to lose, the conservative stuff is over with." Joe Walker had another strong run and finished in the 3rd spot, finishing 4th was Kerry Davis and wrapping up a solid season in 5th place was Mark Schafman. Nic Bidinger has celebrated a banner season in the Grand National division in 2008. He had 11 wins heading into Friday night's races and clinched the championship a couple of weeks back. It could be said that with very little on the line that Bidinger could have just 'phoned' it in, but the competitor in him couldn't live with that. "This is the best way to top off a good season right here with a win," said Bidinger, "This whole season has been fun and this wraps it up good." Don Marrs jumped out to the early lead in the Grand National main event, but midway through the race he encountered lapped traffic. As the traffic blocked most of the track, Marrs seemed indecisive. That opened the door for the 11 time winner this season. Bidinger edged closer to Marrs and as the he made his move for the pass coming out of turn 2, Bidinger made a daring move as he split the two lapped cars and motored his way out into the lead. Once in the lead, he checked out heading on his way to win number 12. "That championship last year, was everything," said Bidinger, "last year we lost it. The goal this year was to win the championship!" Marrs finished 2nd, Jimmy Winkler marched his way to a 3rd place finish, 4th went to Mike Taylor Jr. and 5th went to David Powell. Kelby Ostrander is competing at Lakeside Speedway in the Factory Stock division in 2008 as a rookie. He has learned a lot of things over the year. Some good and some bad. Friday night, he celebrated his first win at Lakeside Speedway. "I was just hoping the race was going to get over with," said Ostrander,
"I was wondering if I could hold on to it." Mike Taylor pounded on the door, but was never able to get a solid run to get by Ostrander. He pushed on to the win, but still wasn't sure of himself. "I was just wanting to stay smooth out there on the track," said Ostrander, "I didn't think it would take this long, but at least we got the win." Taylor came home in the 2nd spot, Don Chaffin was 3rd, the 2008 Points Champion, Buzz Kaster finished 4th and rounding out the top 5 was Tim Shields. .
