RPM Speedway opens 2009 season
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (April 24)—RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, kicked off the 2009 racing season Friday night, April 24, with over 90 cars in competition.

In the IMCA Modified A-feature, Corey Lagroon took the early lead with Jerry Phillips and Jeremy Frenier in close pursuit.  But just past the halfway mark, ‘Gentlemen’ Jerry made the pass and took the lead for the remainder of the 20-lap caution-free race.  Frenier finished second, followed by David Murray Jr., Lagroon, and Dylan Sherfick.  Heat race winners were Lagroon, Phillips, Murray, Randy Wilson, and Sherfick, while Mike Petersilie and Barry Maupin were first to the finish line in the B-mains.

Wichita’s Bryan Lariviere led all 20 laps to capture the victory in the caution plagued IMCA Stock Car feature.  The cautions kept the field close, and Lariviere had Dustin McClurg, Adam Balthazor, Cory Struckhoff and Jason Davis on his back bumper the entire race.  Balthazor nipped McClurg at the finish for the runner-up spot, with Struckhoff and Terry Cunningham rounding out the top five.  Davis, Struckhoff, and Lariviere were the heat race winners.

Jerry Hudson led the first six laps of the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature before the first caution waved on lap 6.  On the restart, Marquette’s B.J. Dauer got by Hudson to take a lead he would not relinquish.  Hudson was able to hold on to second, trailed by Ricky Runnion, Mathew Crowell, and G.W. Fuller.  Heat race victors were Hudson, Daniel Irwin, and Dauer.  Dauer also won the evening’s cash dash, sponsored by Oldham’s Sales and PPG Paints.

In the IMCA Sport Compact feature, Shawn Schneider led the first 2 laps before Nick Wolff took over the top spot.  Schneider took the lead back with 2 laps remaining before Wolff regained the lead on the final lap to take the win.  Schneider was second, followed by Jesse Dunlap.  Schneider won the heat race.

The sponsor for the evening was Discovery Drilling.

Racing returns to RPM Speedway next Friday, May 1, as the United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars make their first appearance of the season at the 3/8-mile oval.  They will be joined by the IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars, and Hobby Stocks.
