WAKEENEY, KS (July 10)—Two of the 3 feature winners at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway were familiar faces in the winner’s circle in racing action Friday evening, July 10. In the IMCA Modified feature, ‘Gorgeous’ George Tyler led the first 4 laps of the 20-lap event before hometown driver John Fose took the lead on lap 5. But as the field took the crossed flags at the halfway mark, ‘The Minneapolis Missle’ Dave Hardesty took over the top spot. A caution on lap 15 bunched the field but Hardesty pulled away for his second win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Josh Hudson finished second, followed by Dylan Sherfick, Fose, and point leader Corey Lagroon. Heat race winners were Jerry Phillips, Hardesty, Brian Calhoon, Tyler, and Sherfick. Mike Petersilie led all 15 laps of the caution free B-feature. The IMCA Stock Car feature was low in numbers, but the drivers put on a great race, which saw 3 different leaders on the first 3 laps of the 20-lap race. Cole Wilson led the opening lap before Pat Bedore took the lead on lap 2. Then ‘The Terminator’ Travis Sherfick took command. The lone caution in the race came on lap 9 when Mel Law spun. Sherfick led the field back to green and led the remaining distance to win his first race at his hometown track this season. Adam Balthazor held off heat two winner Terry Cunningham for the runner-up spot, while point leader Cory Struckhoff and Pat Bedore rounded out the top five. Sherfick won the other heat race. Marquette’s B.J. Dauer continued his dominance in the IMCA Hobby Stock division, winning his fourth feature in 6 outings at Wakeeney. Cody Graham took the lead at the drop of the green in the 15-lap race, then Luke Pfannenstiel took the lead. Pfannenstiel was then passed by Dauer at the halfway mark and pulled away for the victory. G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ Fuller passed Pfannenstiel on the white flag lap to finish second, with Casey Gilmore, Kirk Karst, and Pfannenstiel completing the top five at the checkers. Fuller, Josh Latka, and Dauer were all victorious in their heat race. The evening’s race sponsor was Frontier Ag Inc. The next race at Wakeeney Speedway will be during the Trego County Fair on Monday, July 27. The United Rebel 305 Sprint Series returns, along with IMCA-sanctioned Stock Cars, Northern Sport Mods and Sport Compacts. The sprint cars will run double features to make up for the feature that was rained out on May 25. The green flag flies at 7:30 p.m.
