Osborne, KS, hosts fair races
By Mike Hughes
OSBORNE, KS (July 25) - Osborne (KS) Speedway was the sight of racing action
Saturday evening, July 25, during the Osborne county fair with four classes
in competition.
The IMCA Northern Sport Mods were the featured division on this night and
they did not disappoint. It was a race of ‘Tylers’ as Tyler Sutton of Beloit
and Belleville’s Tyler Frye put on a show. Sutton led the first 9 laps of
the 16-lap event before Frye was finally able to make the pass on lap 10.
But Sutton took the top spot back on the following lap, then Frye made the
winning pass on lap 13 and held off Sutton at the finish for the $500
winner’s check. Brady Schoen topped Brian Conness for third place, with Troy
Attwood rounding out the top five. Attwood and Conness won the two heat
races.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Salina’s Corey Lagroon led from green to
checkered in the 18-lap race to score the win. ‘Smokin’ Joe Cleveland chased
Lagroon the last half of the race but had to settle for the runner-up spot.
‘The Russell Rocket’ Marty Clark finished third, followed by ‘Gentleman’
Jerry Phillips and Barry Maupin. Heat race winners were Lagroon and
Cleveland.
The IMCA Stock Car feature saw Travis ‘The Terminator’ Sherfick of Wakeeney
lead all 14 laps to make his way to victory lane. The race was red flagged
on lap 4 when third running Jay Schmidt barrel rolled off turn 3. Schmidt
was not hurt, but the same could not be said about the car. Sherfick held
off Terry Cunningham most of the race, then Arnold Williams made a charge
late in the race but ran out of laps and had to settle for second.
Cunningham finished third, trailed by heat one winner Adam Balthazor, and
Marty Barth. Sherfick won the other heat race.
Josh Latka in the Green Hornet #96 led the first 2 laps of the IMCA Hobby
Stock feature before Wade Wagenblast of Deshler, NE, took over a lead he
would not relinquish. Heat two victor Mathew Crowell won the race for second
place, followed by Luke Pfannenstiel, heat one winner Jerry Hudson, and Brad
McCoy.
Another night of racing action during the Osborne County Fair takes place
Sunday, July 26, with the same four classes in action starting at 6:30 p.m.
