Wakeeney Speedway closes out season
By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (August 30)—Wakeeney (KS) Speedway wrapped up the 2009 racing season Sunday evening, August 30, with over 70 cars on hand.

‘Maniac’ Matt Fabrizius of Wakeeney took advantage of his pole starting position to lead all 20 laps to score his first A-feature win of the season.  The caution flag waved several times, but Fabrizius was able to pull away each time to find his way to the winner’s circle.  Jason Schoenberger made a late race charge to finish second, followed by Dylan Sherfick, Marty Clark and Dave Hardesty.  Heat race winners were Hardesty, Corey Lagroon, John Fabrizius and Brian Calhoon, while Gary Kline was first to the checkers in the B-feature.  Salina’s Lagroon won the track championship.

The 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature saw both Travis Sherick and Cory Struckhoff with a chance at the track championship.  Sherfick’s hopes appeared to be dashed early as he blew a motor in his heat race, however was able to borrow Marty Barth’s car to run the feature.  Pat Bedore took the lead at the drop of the green, but Wakeeney’s Terry Cunningham took over the top spot and pulled away.  The lone caution in the race came on lap 14 when Josh Crombie hit the wall coming out of turn four.  Cunningham led the field back to green, trailed by Bedore, Struckhoff, Arnold Williams and Jason Davis.  Struckhoff got past Bedore for second but could not catch Cunningham, who won his fourth feature of the season at his hometown track.  Davis finished third, followed by Williams and Wheat Lippelmann.  Sherfick’s sixth place finish gave the hometown driver the track title by 3 points over Struckhoff.  Adam Balthazor and Cunningham won the two heat races.

Casey Gilmore took the early lead in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature before the first caution waved on lap 4 for a spinning G.W. Fuller.  After the restart, the ‘Marquette Muscleman’ B.J. Dauer shot past Gilmore to take the lead.  Dauer held off a late race challenge from Mathew Crowell to win his 7th feature at the speedway this season and win the track championship in the process.  Crowell finished second, followed by Jerry Hudson, Gilmore, and Cody Williams.  Kirt Karst and Dauer were victorious in the two heat races.  Jake Eicher lost a wheel and rolled hard in the first heat but was not injured.

The Northern Sport Mods returned to the 3/8-mile oval 14 cars strong.  Hometown driver Jeremy Blackwill did the same thing in the feature as he did in the second heat race.  Blackwill won the second heat easily, then led all 15 laps of the feature for his first win this season at Wakeeney.  Joe Couse chased Blackwill the second half of the race but had to settle for the runner-up position.  Heat one winner Brian Conness, Troy Robinson and Duane Wahrman rounded out the top five.  The sport mods have one points race remaining at RPM Speedway in Hays.

The evening’s race sponsor was Day Auto Glass & S Paint of Wakeeney, and Speed Grafx of Collyer.
