NORTON, KS (April 10, 2010) - Elmwood Park Speedway in Norton, KS, kicked off the 2010 season Saturday night, April 10, with 5 classes of cars in competition. In the IMCA Modified feature, Oberlin’s David Murray took advantage of Brandon Blochlinger’s miscue to pick up the win. Blochlinger took the lead at the drop of the green and pulled out to a big lead over ‘Smokin’ Joe Cleveland and Murray. The first caution waved on lap 7 when Rick Schwab had problems. Blochlinger again pulled away on the restart, but 2 laps later, got high in turn 1 and hit the guardrail in turn 2, knocking down a tire and bringing out the caution. Murray had passed Cleveland on the previous lap to take the top spot and led the field back to green and held on for the victory. Cleveland was second, followed by Ronnie Wallace, Corey Lagroon and Blochlinger, who worked his way back up to fifth. Schwab and Blochlinger won the two heat races. The IMCA Stock Car feature was its usual slobberknocker. Dustin McClurg took the early lead, trailed by Casey Werkmeister and heat one winner Jason Davis. By lap 5, Davis moved to second, followed by heat two winner Josh Hudson of Kensington. McClurg led at the halfway mark of the 20-lap race, but the caution waved 2 laps later when Bob Rutherford came to a stop. On the restart, Hudson took the lead and ‘The Hammer’ held off the field the remaining laps for the win. McClurg, Davis, Tim Leiker and Jesse Taylor rounded out the top five. Hometown driver Kelly Karnopp led from green to checkered in the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature. A couple of early caution flags kept the field close, and the top four cars were close but Karnopp was first to the checkers, followed by Jeromy Wagner, Josh Latka, Cody Graham and G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ Fuller. Latka and Fuller were victorious in the 2 heat races. Wade Wagenblast led the first 8 laps of the 12-lap IMCA Northern Sport Mod main event before Wakeeney’s Brian Conness took the lead and held off Wagenblast for the win. Bryan Herrick finished third, followed by Kaid Calhoon and Tyler Watts. Troy Attwood won the heat race. Justin Schwien of Russell took the lead from Bill Hays just past the halfway mark of the 305 Sprint Car feature to claim victory. Heat race winner Randy Bantam finished second, followed by Shelby Stapel and Hays. Racing action returns to the ½-mile oval on Saturday, April 24. The same 5 classes will return to action with the green flag flying at 6:00 p.m. For more information on Elmwood Park Speedway, contact Jerry Bantam at 785-877-5353 or e-mail him at frakrstr@ruraltel.net.
