Sprint cars make final appearance at Hays
By Mike Hughes

HAYS, KS (August 20) - RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, was host to the United Rebel Sprint Series 305 Sprint Cars for the final time this season Friday evening, August 20.

Colorado’s Kaden Taylor took the lead at the drop of the green of the 25-lap sprint car feature but slid high in turn one on lap 9, allowing point leader Ty Williams to take over the top spot. The lone caution waved on lap 14 when Jared Kern came to a stop on the track. However during the caution, race leader Williams also developed problems and came to a stop on the track. Williams was towed back to the pits, ending his night, and giving defending series champion C.J. Johnson of Quinter the lead, which he held to the checkered flag. Barry Crane finished second, followed by ‘The Rainman’ Ray Seemann, Darren Bowman, and ‘Flyin’ Brian Herbert. Heat race winners were Williams, Keefe Hemel, and Seemann.

‘Maniac’ Matt Fabrizius of Wakeeney took advantage of his pole starting position in the 20-lap Teel’s Trucks IMCA Modified feature to score his first win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Fabrizius was chased by Jason Schoenberger and Jeremy Zorn late in the race, but they had to settle for second and third. ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick and ‘Rapid’ Ronnie Hill would round out the top five. Hill, Schoenberger, and Darrick Klima were victorious in their heat races, while Nate Moore topped the B-main.

The Adronics Elrob Manufacturing IMCA Stock Car feature got off to a rough start. It took three tries to get the opening lap in, then on lap 2, Pat Bedore was tagged from behind in turn 4 and rolled his #99B on its top. Pat was okay but done for the night. B.J. Waggoner inherited the lead on the restart, but was passed on lap 6 by Adam Balthazor. Balthazor led the field at the halfway mark of the 20-lap race, but point leader Terry Cunningham of Wakeeney made his way to the front on lap 13, only to give way to Travis ‘The Terminator’ Sherfick on the next circuit. After a caution on lap 18, Cunningham got back past Sherfick when the green flag reappeared and held on the final 2 laps for his third win at RPM this season. Sherfick finished in the runner-up spot, trailed by Balthazor, Rod Wadel, and Waggoner. Heat race winners were Waggoner and Jay Schmidt.

Heat one victor Shianne Carter of Salina led from green to checkered in the caution free 15-lap Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compact feature, her second win in a row at Hays. Second heat race winner Vincent Jasper kept Carter in his sights but could not get close enough to make a challenge. Andrue Halpain finished third, followed by Allen Rice and point leader Jesse Dunlap.

The IMCA-sanctioned Hobby Stocks and Northern Sport Mods had the night off.

Crawford Supply of Hays and Plainville was the evening’s race sponsor. It was also Cruisin’ through the Summer night with Western Beverage providing several prizes for the fans in attendance.

Racing action returns to RPM Speedway on Friday, September 3. It will be Fan Appreciation Night with all adults admitted for just $5.00, and all kids 12 & under admitted free. There will also be $1.00 beers.
