Schoenberger hits daily double again at Wakeeney
By Mike Hughes
WAKEENEY, KS (May 1, 2011) - Gorham’s Jason Schoenberger has mastered the
3/8-mile oval at Wakeeney (KS) Speedway this season. For the second time
this season, Schoenberger hit the daily double, winning both the IMCA stock
car and IMCA Modified feature Sunday evening, May 1. Between the 2 classes,
Schoenberger has won all 4 stock car features and 2 mod main events in 2011.
B.J. Wagoner led the opening lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature, but was
passed on the following lap by Rod Bencken. But the 10th starting
Schoenberger worked his way up through the field and got under Bencken in
turn 2 on lap 7 to take the lead and pull away to the checkers in the 20-lap
caution free race to keep his perfect record intact at Wakeeney. Bencken
finished second, followed by Bruce Plumisto, Nick Tubbs, and heat two winner
Jay Hachmeister. Adam Balthazor won the other heat race.
The only caution in the IMCA Modified feature came on the opening lap when
Bill Albin and Rodger Peck got hooked together in turn 2. On the restart,
Mike Petersilie took command, followed by Jesse Richter and Peck. Richter
stayed close to the leader and took over the top spot on lap 9. But as the
leaders came up on lapped traffic on lap 14, Richter got trapped behind a
lapped car, which allowed Schoenberger to make the winning pass as he held
on to the checkers. Point leader Corey Lagroon gave chase but had to settle
for second, followed by Jerry Phillips, Petersilie, and Peck. Heat race
winners were Petersilie and Peck.
Aaron Honas led the first 3 laps of the caution free 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock
feature before Russell’s Kirk Karst took the lead. Karst led to the finish,
followed by ‘Leadfoot’ Luke Pfannenstiel, Honas, G.W. ‘Cheeseburger’ Fuller,
and heat race winners Tyrel Smith and Jason McIntyre. However Karst did not
pass post-race tech and was disqualified, giving Pfannenstiel his third win
of the season at the 3/8-mile oval.
In the IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature, Clayton Wilson led the first 2 laps
before the red flag waved on lap 3 when John Colbert of Dodge City rolled
between turns 3 & 4. Colbert was okay but done for the night. Wilson led the
field back to green, but heat two victor Bryan Lariviere of Wichita took
over the lead on lap 5 and would lead the rest of the 15-lap event to score
his second win on the weekend after making a trip to victory lane the night
before at Minneapolis Raceway. Heat 3 winner Wilson, Blaine Walt, Brian
Conness, and Chris Heim rounded out the top five. Justin Dietz also won a
heat race.
It was Boy Scout/Girl Scout Night at the speedway with scouts getting free
admission with a paid adult. The evening’s race sponsor was Carrico
Implement of Hays.
The next event at Wakeeney will be the annual 2-day Memorial Challenge on
Sunday, May 29, and Monday, May 30. All four divisions will be in action
with a 6:00 p.m. start time both nights.
