Maier, Woodruff sprint car winners at Hays
By Mike Hughes
HAYS, KS (May 27)—Close to 60 sprint car teams checked in for ‘Sprint Car
Maynia’ at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, on Friday evening, May 27. Dodge City’s
Garry Lee Maier took advantage of lapped traffic to claim the win in the
NCRA 360 Sprint Car Series A-main, while Michael Woodruff of Santanta led
from green to checkered to win the URSS 305 Sprint Car main event.
The NCRA 360 Sprint Car main event got off to a wild start. Jason Martin led
the opening lap, but C.J. Johnson pulled alongside Martin at the flagstand
on lap 2. But on the third lap, Garry Lee Maier made contact with J.D.
Johnson, who went spinning and was hit by Jon Freeman. Johnson and Freeman
were both okay but done for the night. Martin led the field back to green,
and by the halfway mark of the 30-lap race, Maier had worked his way past
Johnson for second. Maier then took advantage of Martin getting held up in
lapped traffic on lap 18 and took the lead, which he would hold the
remaining distance for the win and the $2,000 victor’s check. Johnson
finished second, followed by a late charging Tony Bruce Jr., Martin, and
Jeremy Campbell. Heat race winners were Martin, Forrest Southerland, Johnson
and Maier, while Ty Williams was first to the wire in the B-feature.
Woodruff started on the pole of the 25-lap URSS 305 Sprint Car main event
and was able to hold off Darren Bowman the entire distance to claim victory.
The lone caution waved on lap 13 when Kaden Taylor spun off turn four. Barry
Crane and Bowman lined up behind Woodruff on the restart but could not make
a pass. Bowman finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Jason Martin,
Josh Fairbank, and Crane. Ray Seemann, Craig Jecha, Brian Herbert, and
Martin were heat race victors. Zach Blurton was first to the checkers in the
B-feature.
The Steel Fabrications IMCA Sport Compacts were also on hand, and heat two
winner Dean Herzog led wire to wire in the caution free 12-lap feature. Heat
one winner Michael Copper finished second, trailed by Trever Schmidt, point
leader Dave Juenemann, and Jesse Dunlap. Herzog made it a clean sweep with a
win in the Oldham Sales cash dash.
Sponsors for the evening were Miller Trucking, Lacrosse; Crawford Supply,
Hays; Royal Drilling, Russell; S & S Trailer Sales and Trucking, Ness City;
Polymer Services, Plainville; Wolverine Geophysical Surveys, Hays; and
Vernie’s Trux & Equipment Inc./Toys 4 Trux, Hays.
The five regular divisions return to action on Friday, June 10, for ‘Stars &
Stripes Forever Night’. Race fans are encouraged to wear their red, white &
blue. There will also be a tire roll at intermission in which a lucky fan
could win a gift certificate for a new set of tires. Race time is 7:30 p.m.
